Reminders for Dust of Dreams
Notes on half a book
Dust of Dreams is an odd read. It hasn't seen the reconsideration that Toll the Hounds has; it's ranked ninth in our last reader survey. The Author's Note at the beginning spells out some of the reasons:
Dust of Dreams is the first half of a two-volume novel, to be concluded with The Crippled God. Accordingly, if you’re looking for resolutions to various story-threads, you won’t find them. Also, do note that there is no epilogue and, structurally, Dust of Dreams does not follow the traditional arc for a novel.
He's not kidding. But that's not the whole story.
DoD does have a climax, but it feels more like the mid-book climax that is Y'ghatan in The Bonehunters chapter 7. It's monumental, it changes things, but it doesn't reach out and incorporate disparate storylines or tie together themes. It also arrives incredibly suddenly and catches me off guard even when I know what's coming.
More generally, DoD takes its time. Erikson continues to lean in to the slow character moments that characterize Toll the Hounds, but now does so with the urgency dictated by the imminent conclusion of the series. Theme drives DoD as much as plot -- to the extent that some readers like to claim that basically nothing happens.
There are two specific things to look out for as you read. First, there's a specific plot that seems very odd if you don't catch one hint in the prologue. In order to not give away the game, u/kashmora and I have decided to discuss that plot in more detail under spoiler tags in order to maintain a balance between spoon-feeding the reveal and actually having something to say.
Second, there's a notorious event in chapter 15. It's effectively foreshadowed and won't come as a huge shock, but it's brutal. If any previous sexual violence has bothered you, this is guaranteed to turn your stomach. It's handled respectfully, but it's vile. As the chapter approaches, we will likely give lines and timestamps to stop and then restart reading if you feel you just can't do it.
I genuinely like Dust of Dreams (and, unusually, tend to rate it over The Crippled God). But it's an experience.
Characters
Since Dust of Dreams picks up largely where Reaper's Gale left off, we have a somewhat limited cast of new characters. That said, a) we continue to expand on the Lether continent and b) we're bringing back characters we haven't seen since The Bonehunters.
Gods and Ascendants
Elder
- Errastas: The Errant, Master of Holds. Likes to "push" and claims that to be his nature.
- Kilmandaros: Primarily known for pummeling her problems into dust. Mother of Sechul Lath.
- Sechul Lath: Knuckles, the Lord of Chance and Mischance. He, like his mother, seems to have extra joints and a horizontally hinged sternum.
- Mael: Bugg, Tehol's one-time man-servant and now Ceda, Chancellor, and Treasurer. Also the god of the sea.
- Ursto Hoobutt and Pinosel: Ancient gods of beer, wine, and fertility.
- Olar Ethil: Goddess and Soletaken Eleint Bonecaster of the T'lan Imass.
- Togg and Fanderay: The Wolves of Winter, gods of war and current occupants of the Beast Throne. Worshiped by the Perish Grey Helms and, before their destruction, the Grey Swords under Toc Anaster.
- Grizzin Farl: An ancient god, now disappeared.
- Tiam (or T'iam, or Tiamatha): Goddess of dragons.
New Gods and Ascendants
- Hood: You remember Hood, right? The Jaghut god of death that just died himself?
- D'rek: The Worm of Autumn, goddess of decay.
- Dessembrae: Lord of Tragedy. Divine aspect of Dassem Ultor.
- Shadowthrone and Cotillion: God of Shadow and the Rope, Patron of Assassins. Schemey plotters.
Letherii
- Tehol (the Only) is now the King of Lether
- Janath Anar is his Queen
- Brys Beddict titled a Prince now, Commander of the Letherii Army
- Aranict a promising High Mage, Atri-Ceda
The Wanderers
- Last: An ex-Letherii farmer. Lived with his father after his mother died when he was young. A big but meek fellow.
- Asane: A meek Letherii woman. Talked down upon by both Nappet & Sheb.
- Sheb: An ex-convict. Sentenced to what amounts to a death sentence, he survived prison, though was significantly changed for it.
- Rautos: A man with scant few memories, reminiscings of his wife, and a familiar name.
- Taxilian: An architect from the city of Taxila, Seven Cities, also with a familiar name.
- Nappet: Another Letherii ex-convict. He's a bully.
- Breath: A Letherii witch that's filled with spite & thoughts of drowning.
- The Ghost: An unnamed character that can move between the Wanderers at will. Has peculiar memories, though is presumably incorporeal.
The Refugium
- Rud Elalle: Son of Menandore and Udinaas, growing up very fast (think Silverfox).
- Ulshun Pral: A leader of the Bentract Imass of the Refugium. Son of Onrack T'emlava and Kilava Onas.
- Seren Pedac: Acquitor and budding mage of Mockra, Trull's widow.
- Udinaas: Former slave to the Sengar household and former confidant of Rhulad. Dark, cynical, but way too insightful.
The 14th and its Allies
Malazan Leadership
- Lostara Yil: Former Red Blade, former lover of the Claw Pearl, now Tavore's right hand in T'amber's place. Trained in the Shadowdance.
- Blistig: Former commander of the Aren Guard, now Fist under Tavore.
- Kindly and Pores: The notorious captain and his long-suffering lieutenant, and/or Master Sergeant, and/or Quartermaster.
Marines
- Keneb: Fist who led the defense of Froth Wolf and Silanda in Malaz City. Detached to the Marines.
- Faradan Sort: Keneb's second in command. May have stood the Stormwall in the past.
- Bottle, Cuttle, Smiles, Koryk, Tarr, and Corabb Bhilan Thenu'alas: Fiddler's squad. Bottle is still a mage who can control animals and Corabb is still Oponn's favorite. 4th squad, 9th company.
- Gesler, Stormy, Sands, Shortnose, Flashwit, Uru Hela, and Mayfly: Gesler's squad, almost entirely composed of heavies. 5th squad, 9th company.
- Hellian, Touchy, Brethless, Balgrid, Tavos Pond, Maybe, and Lutes: Hellian's squad. Hellian is a drunk and has arachnophobia. Touchy and Brethless, her two corporals, have served under her since way back in Kartool. 8th squad, 9th company.
- Thom Tissy, Tulip, Ramp, Jibb, Gullstream, Mudslinger, and Bellig Harn: 12th squad, 9th company under Thom Tissy.
- Urb, Reem, Bowl, Hanno, Saltlick, and Scant: 13th squad, 9th company. Urb earned his own squad after dragging Hellian out of Y'ghatan, an event she still periodically wants to kill him over.
- Pravalak Rim, Honey, Strap Mull, Shoaly, Sinter, Kisswhere, and Lookback: 4th squad, 3rd company.
- Badan Gruk, Ruffle, Skim, Nep Furrow, Reliko, and Vastly Blank: The heavily Dal Honese 5th squad, 3rd company. Nep Furrow is a bush warlock, who talks in an incomprehensible accent.
- Primly, Hunt, Mulvan Dreader, Neller, Skulldeath, and Drawfirst: 10th squad, 3rd company.
New Bridgeburners
- Hedge: previously dead, now seemingly alive, Bridgeburner.
Other Soldiers
- Cord, Shard, Limp, Ebron, Crump, and Sinn: 7th squad, 9th company, largely former Ashok Regiment. Sinn is a traumatized girl and high mage. Crump's actual name is Jamber Bole, High Marshal of the Mott Irregulars.
- Balm, Deadsmell, Throatslitter, Galt, Lobe, and Widdershins: This humble writer's favorite squad, the 9th, 9th company. Deadsmell is a mage of Hood. Throatslitter's laugh can nearly kill all on its own.
- Masan Gilani: Dal Honese heavy and excellent rider. She has... other charms. Technically in Urb's squad?
Civilians
- Banaschar: Former high priest of D'rek, the Worm of Autumn. Stole the entire temple coffers after D'rek killed her followers (except Tayschrenn and Banaschar himself).
- Withal: "Foreigner" from The Bonehunters and the Meckros blacksmith who made Rhulad's sword for the Crippled God.
- Sandalath Drukorlat: Tiste Andii wife of Withal. First killed long ago, her soul was released by the Crimson Guards traveling with Seren Pedac in Midnight Tides. She was restored as a companion for Withal and it didn't go well at first. Now they're married, so something worked out?
- Grub: Keneb's adopted son. Walked the Chain of Dogs. Now the only friend of Sinn. Has a knack for saying prophetic things. Oh, and there's an epigraph in House of Chains (Chapter 19, if you're curious) that identifies him as a future First Sword of the Malazan Empire.
Khundryl Burned Tears
- Warleader Gall: still headed by him
- Hanavat: his wife
Perish Grey Helms
- Mortal Sword Krughava: Fifty-odd years old Mortal Sword of the Wolves of Winter (you may recall that Toc held that title in conjunction with Krughava).
- Shield Anvil Tanakalian: Shield Anvil of the Grey Helms. Homesick, young, and with some curious ideas about his role.
- Destriant Run'Thurvian: Destriant of the Grey Helms. Befriended Fist Keneb in the Bonehunters. Doesn't hold Tanakalian in particularly high esteem.
K'Chain Che'Malle and Associates
We meet a surviving nest - Ampelas Rooted - headed by Matron Gunth'an Acyl. She is guarded by J'an Sentinels (Bre'nigan), K'ell Hunters (Sag'Churok, Kor Thuran, Rythok) and Shi'gal Assassins (Gu'Rull). Her One Daughter is called Gunth Mach who was last seen cutting down Redmask at the end of RG, along with Sag'Churok.
The Snake
A group of refugee children on the run from Kolanse, marching through hostile lands and suffering from hunger and thirst. The train is led by the oldest/tallest boy among them, called Rutt. He carries a baby called Held. His second in command is Badalle, who is also our main Snake POV character. Other notable children among them are Saddic who follows Badalle and commits her poems to memory; Brayderal who seems pale inspite of the harsh sun.
The Shake
- Yedan Derryg: Half-brother to Yan Tovis. Known for a chiseled jaw.
- Yan Tovis: Preda at Shake Tower, also called Twilight.
- Pully and Skwish: Ancient Shake witches.
White Face Barghast and Associates
- Onos Toolan: Warleader of the White Face Barghast. You may note, technically not Barghast.
- Hetan: His wife. Daughter of the late Humbrall Taur.
- Cafal: Hetan's brother and Great Warlock of the White Faces.
- Setoc (of the Wolves): Known as Stayandi. A Letherii child and sole survivor of Redmask's attack in Reaper's Gale. Now a wolf-born child with an innate connection to wolves.
- Maral Eb:Chief of the Barahn clan of the White Faces
- Sekara (the Vile): It's in the name, really.
T'lan Imass
- Nom Kala: Bonecaster of the Brold T'lan Imass.
The Bolkando
- Chancellor Rava: Chancellor of the Bolkando Kingdom. Is oddly attracted to Felash. Is also in his seventies while Felash is fourteen.
- Conquestor Avalt: Military commander of the Bolkando Army with the glaring exception of the Evertine Legion. A decent military commander and he looks the part.
- Queen Abrastal: also called Firehair, commands the Evertine legion, co-ruler of the Bolkando lands
- Princess Felash: 14th daughter of Queen Abrastal, deemed the cleverest by her mother, 14 years old, away from the kingdom on a diplomatic mission.
Forkrul Assail
There are Pures, Watered and Shriven. The Pures are - as the name suggests - pure-blooded Forkrul Assail. The Watered are hybrids of Forkrul Assail and other races - often humans - while the Shriven refer to any race that doesn't have enough Forkrul blood to be considered Watered. The Shriven are essentially the slave caste of the Forkrul.
Other
- Icarium: Half-Jaghut son of Gothos. Cursed to forget but immensely powerful.
Wait, what's going on again? What you need to know to start reading.
The Malaz 14th - now Tavore's Bonehunters - invaded the Letherii Empire, ostensibly as a punitive expedition against the Tiste Edur raiding on Imperial lands (namely, Sepik). At the same time, due to machinations by Tehol Beddict, in conjunction with the Malazan invasion, Letherii society was in intense upheaval which ended in a defacto revolution placing Tehol at the head of the Kingdom of Lether.
In a similar timeframe, Icarium Lifestealer activated a strange machine with far-reaching consequences, one of the many among which being levelling an entire city block and killing - among others - Taxilian, Senior Assessor, Taralack Veed, and Rautos Hivanar.
The Errant was bound to Feather Witch through a temple sanctified in his name, and though he eventually won out - drowning Feather Witch in the fetid waters beneath Letheras - he lost his eye. The loss of power stings, and due to a combination of factors, the Errant craves a return to his ancient power. Also, Brys Beddict has returned to the world of the living.
There's a whole lot of skykeeps within the Imperial Warren, as well as a handful of dragons nailed to crosses throughout the books - among them, an "otataral dragon" as witnessed by Pearl & Lostara in House of Chains, and Sorrit, a dragon aspected to Serc, as found by Icarium & Mappo in the Bonehunters.
Redmask failed - and died - in whatever quest the K'Chain Che'Malle set to him, and it seems they're getting desperate.
Silchas Ruin set off to attack Letheras but was beaten back - chiefly by a few well-placed cussers to the face. "Fucking dragon."
Geography
We mostly stay in the continent of Lether but now we also include the Eastern end called Kolanse. Here is a fan made beautifully rendered map of all the places we encounter- done by u/joshuabbutler
Note: Given the extensive Dramatis and the convergence of dozens of threads in this pre-final book, we are stopping the intro here. We plan to update more and expand this further as we keep reading.

2023.06.10 05:37 crapponaspatula Please do yourself a favor and stay away from Mint Mobile.
So, an update to my story regarding my previous post here:
https://www.reddit.com/mintmobile/comments/144rwd6/i_am_sooooo_mad/ Worst experience I've ever had in my entire life. I spent the last two days for HOURS ON END trying to get my account reinstated. Not ONE agent helped me over the phone. It was a bunch of empty promises saying that I would get contacted by their supervisors or their "back office" as they like to call it (doesn't that sound shady?). Lo and behold, one agent did a little bit of digging and informed me that someone else out there had the SAME SIM CARD as me and requested a refund back to my card before my 7 day refund period ended. The agents kept saying I requested the refund when I told EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THEM THAT I DID NOT.
I was NEVER contacted over the phone by a supervisor either. I initially wanted to continue my service. I got 5 bars out in the boondocks. Here in South Carolina of all places. But NOPE. Mint's incompetence (CANCELLING MY ACCOUNT WHEN I DIDN'T EVER GIVE PERMISSION) caused me to request a refund. They then PROCEEDED TO REACTIVATE MY ACCOUNT even AFTER I told them I wanted to cancel because of their incompetent agents.
Long story short:
1) Lost my service and Mint claimed it was someone else who had the same SIM card number and requested a refund, saying it was me who did it. FALSE 2) Spent the last 2 days on the phone with incompetent agents who gave me empty promises, saying a supervisor would contact me. Never happened. 3) Fed up, I spoke to an agent earlier and told them to cancel my account for good. Guess they didn't include that in the notes. 4) Account was reinstated DESPITE me telling them to close my account.
I reported this to the FCC, BBB, and started a dispute with my credit card issuer. I have never seen so much incompetence in my entire life. I am demanding a refund so I can get my money back and leave Mint for good. Goodbye Mint Mobile. You just lost a valued customer.

2023.06.10 04:06 Elegant-Molasses3340 Who leaked the Sabo killing Cobra picture to Big News Morgan?
With chapter 1085 and 1086, we see a transponder snail take the infamous picture of Sabo over Cobra. It is unclear who owns the transponder which means there must be a spy (possibly amongst the Gorosei).
Note: It can't belong to Warpol, because the paper got published before Warpol made contact as seen in chapter 956. Timeline of the events in chapter 956 + 1086 also discount the possibility of Warpol being the one who leaked the information.
If it belongs to the government, that means Morgan published a fake story with the information given by unknown government leak. In 1086 we see CPO is looking for Sabo and Vivi, while Pel is looking for Cobra. So we can assume that the government fabricated the lie that Cobra was killed by Sabo. This is fine until we realize that in chapter 956, we see a CP agent try to take out Morgan to prevent this news from being published. The news would already be common knowledge between the royalty of all nations + the marines (as shown by Garp in 956).
So, like when Luffy became an emperor, the news would be too big to cover up. So the government tried to do damage control by preventing the leak of the picture (to prevent exactly what happened - i.e: Flame Emperor Sabo). That still poses the question - who leaked the picture? Very few people should have access to the throne room to install a spy camera.

2023.06.10 02:48 pranaamm Powerful couples
A series where the ML and FL/ML are powerful. I just don’t want a huge power imbalance. A strong story with romance at its centre.
Examples : Eternal Love - both of them were actually powerful in different ways.
A female enters Imperial college: both of them were high status and good at martial arts. Story not so good so I wouldn’t suggest this.
WoH/ The Untamed: both MLs are super powerful and the stories are amazing as well.

2023.06.10 02:45 LordSadoth [Online][Other] Sword World: Bandits of Idelbard. A campaign in Japan's most popular Fantasy Adventure RPG!
SWORD WORLD: BANDITS OF IDELBARD
Sword World 2.5 is the latest edition of Japan's most popular adventure fantasy game. Translated by a dedicated group of online superfans, it is now available to play in English! Create a unique and highly customizable character by buying from a wide array of Major and Minor classes, allowing you to create your ideal fantasy character. Want to emulate your favorite Final Fantasy job class? You can do it! Want to create something wholly unique to yourself? You can do that too! With so many classes to mix and match, the possibilities for your character are nearly limitless. And with its easy-to-understand 2d6 system, Sword World is easy to pick up for beginners, while its hidden depth is just waiting for those willing to put in the time to truly master it!
Season 1
Idelbard has been your home for as long as you can remember. But for the last 20 years, it has been under the ironclad domination of the magitechnologically advanced Empire of Calvir. While most Idelbarders fall in line in order to survive and provide for their families, you have made the decision to live outside the law and maintain your own freedom, in defiance of the Empire's oppression. You are a member of the Brass Moon Clan, a gang of outlaws and bandits carving out a living and a community in the wilds of Idelbard. Each of you has a bounty, a record of some crime you've committed against the Calvirians that landed you permanently outside legal society.
Tonight the camp celebrates the birth of a child, the firstborn child of the camp's huntmaster. Everyone is excited to welcome the newborn and enjoy community with the other members of the Clan. But while the bandits prepare for the festival, hidden eyes watch from the wilderness. Old sins are coming back to haunt the Brass Moon bandits, and your own past may soon spell disaster for your chosen family.
Sword World: Bandits of Idelbard is a campaign set in a homebrew fantasy world where the PCs play as bandits forced into a life of crime by an occupying empire. You will need to evade bounty hunters while conducting raids and heists on Imperials, defend your clan against vicious wild monsters, and discover secrets buried beneath Idelbard that have remained dormant for centuries.
A Note on What "Season 1" Means I break my campaigns into distinct narrative arcs or sections known as "Seasons," which is a sort of half-step between an adventure and a campaign. Typically, a season begins with a fairly railroad-y starting scenario, leading to an inciting incident that establishes the overall goal and antagonist of the season. From here, PCs are given several objectives that they can complete in their own way and at their own pace, helping to grow their power until they can challenge the final part of the season.

If you're interested in this game, please shoot me a DM on Discord at cornbreadcomrade. Please note that this game is explicitly queer-friendly and anti-racist. The GM (me!) is a queer person, and this policy is completely non-negotiable. There will be a zero-tolerance policy for bigotry of any kind.
The game will be played weekly, on Fridays at ~7:00 PM CST. There will be a degree of flexibility on the day and time, given that everyone is an adult and has their own schedules.
Voice chat on Discord, gameplay on Roll20
Meet the GM
Hi! My name is Tyler or Corny, I'm 28 years old, and I've been running TTRPGs since about 2007/2008. I value exciting and dramatic stories with lots of character-driven moments and deadly battles. This game is set in a homebrew world, but most of your assumptions from Raxia will probably hold true here. There are abysses, sword labyrinths, Barbarous, elves, tabbits, etc., just with a slightly different flavor and mythic history to set them apart.
Thank you for your interest, and I look forward to playing with you!

2023.06.10 02:10 EdgyAllanPoe126 Well, This is a First!
This is my first post, and I'm no writer, but I felt the need to share this bizarre story with everyone. Has anyone else in the hotel industry experienced anything like this before??
For the sake of the story, names have been changed:
Manager1 - General Manager
Manager2- Front desk Manager
Jake- Housekeeper
Little bit of information: I've been in the hotel industry for about two years now as a front desk agent, so I've seen some shit, but this, is a whole other LEVEL! XD. Also, note, my hotel lobby is not connected to rooms, so the rooms are exterior entrance, surrounding my lobby.
So here is the story! It's 9:40 at night. I'm exhausted as I was finishing up a double shift, which started at 7 am and was to end at 11 pm. I start cleaning up as one does toward the end of their shift. Sweeping, mopping, coffee, etc. As I am doing this, I get the most panicked call I've ever heard! "Someone has been in my room!" She says.
"Excuse me? What did you say?" I replied, genuinely confused.
"Someone has been in my room! I just got back, and someone named Jake has left a note in my room!"
"Okay ma'am, take a breath with me." *We breath together* " Would you mind coming up to the front desk? Let's move rooms, and I'd like to see the note if that's okay."
She agrees and says she will be up in a few minutes. I look up the name Jake in my system and there is only one person in house with that as a LAST name. So, the confusion just continues. She comes up to the front desk, in pure panic again and presents the note.
"I'm calling the police! This is not okay! Do you know how terrifying this is as a woman who is alone in a hotel!"
While she is panicking, I read the note. This is what the note said (with name changed):
"Hi Miss. Are you single. My name is Jake. 555-555-1234. I was assigned your room and thought I'd ask before you leave. Have a good day, signed YOUR HOUSEKEEPER"
What. The. Hell. This housekeeper left a note in this woman's room while he was cleaning!
I compared the phone number to his number in my phone, and it was in fact his phone number.
I try to keep her calm, and assure her, this man is not currently working and "should" not be on property. "Ma'am, you have every right to contact police, but before you do, can I call management for their course of action, as this is an employee we are talking about."
She agrees to this, and it is at this point that she mentions that she leaves for work at 6 am and she did not return until about 9:30. She also mentioned that she did not request housekeeping services, and that she cannot confirm but she believes that her clothes have been rummaged through. Well, my housekeepers work from like 9a-12p, so this confused me even more! At what point did this housekeeper see this woman?
I contact manager2 and he tells me what to do for this poor woman such as offering her a larger room (in view of our camera to keep an eye on her.) Offered her a refund and asked for a picture of the note. He informed me he would let manager 1 know about all of this but that it wouldn't be until tomorrow to actually discuss everything and discuss consequences.
I inform the poor woman of all of this, and she was satisfied, however, still felt the need to contact law enforcement, because again, at what point did this man see her, she hasn't been on property except to sleep! I did also let her know that this housekeeper was not on shift again until Saturday and that she is safe.
I move her room to a mini suite and checked on her 2 more times before my shift ended. Police never showed up, but she claims a report was made. I let my night auditor know all of this and he kept on eye on things during his shift. Nothing fishy happened, which is great!
As I was leaving for the night, Manager 1 texted me and said this employee will be terminated Saturday morning (his next shift) as soon as he walks in the door. (That's what she said, but I imagine them having a meeting with him to be like, wtf dude, but who knows.)
*The next day*
I'm back at 7 am, and I had the pleasure of letting this woman know that this housekeeper is being terminated for this unacceptable behavior.
Manager 1 came in and was just speechless about the whole situation. She said in her 9+ years of working in hotels, she's never seen something like this!
Manager 2 said the same thing!
Has anyone else experienced something like this? I want to hear your story!

2023.06.10 01:57 Frank_Leroux Molossus, Chapter Nineteen
First Chapter Chapter Eighteen Chao peered at the holographic display at the front of the landing boat as she talked to an international audience. “Okay, folks! You can now see the Coalition Exploration Bureau’s ship
Exultant Finger of Rithro. It’s missing its usual armor configuration; normally, this corvette would have triangular cones of armor at the front and back. But they re-configured that armor material into a shell to prevent us from seeing them as they flew towards Earth. Merely as a precaution; they flipped the shell around a few weeks ago to display their ship to us. They even extended their radiators towards our planet, which to them is a signal of surrender.”
She smiled at Parvati, who floated next to her. “Pretty cool, right?”
“Very cool indeed!” exclaimed Parvati. “So where is the damage?”
Chao pointed. “See these toroidal tanks around the middle of the ship? They hold hydrogen for the ship’s fusion drive, but after tangling with that Breaker some of them got punctured. You can see the holes there, there, and there. That means they’re now limited in how long they can burn the reactor. Plus the FTL drive is now pretty much kaput. It apparently uses a lot of energy.”
Parvati pondered the display. “Faster than light,” she mused. “We need that. After we get the fusion drive technology, of course. Assuming that ever comes out of committee.”
Chao laughed. “Well, that’s why we’re here, right? To show all of humanity what could be ours.”
“Will we go outside? I mean, for real outside?” The actress reached towards the display, halting when she realized there was no physical screen.
“We’ve got pressure suits. Should be okay, we did plan for going out for a few minutes to get some direct video. It’ll be limited in time, those suits aren’t really meant for proper EVAs…”
“Oh, that’s no problem!” said Takh from behind them, causing both women to do the equivalent of a zero-g jump. For someone so big, he somehow managed to just…arrive on the scene. “We’ve got plenty of components on board, we can make you all some proper hardsuits!” He grinned at the camera on Chao’s chest; watching an udhyr grin was an awe-inspiring sight, what with all of the teeth and mandibles. “It’s all snap-together for any body type, it works just like your Legos!”
Parvati, of course, was the first to regain her composure. “Thank you Takh, I’m sure that will be very welcome. One thing has occurred to me; even if our material is successful in allowing you to patch your tanks, you will still require hydrogen to fill them, yes?”
The XO’s cheer didn’t fade. “Of course. We’ll find a nearby ice-containing body and extract us some hydrogen. We already have a few candidates chosen. You can all come and ride along! It should be fun to watch.”
“Yes, very fun.” Parvati met Chao’s eyes in a clear unspoken message of
is this guy for real? A much smaller hand crept its way around Takh’s leather-armored shoulder. “Now, my dear,” said McCoy. “We mustn’t interrupt the PR people. They’re half the reason we’re out here, after all.” She winked at the two other women; both of the latter winked back.
“Oh, of course!” Takh bowed formally to the two. “Forgive me.”
“No worries,” said Chao.
“There is nothing to forgive, my good sir,” replied Parvati with an equally formal bow.
The huge alien and petite corporal vanished, leaving the two women to watch the ship as the boat headed for its docking cradle.
“They are utterly adorable,” said Parvati.
“So are you two,” said Chao.
“Sorry?”
“You and Ravindar. I’m not saying to make your move right now. We’re gonna be on camera for a while, and I know I just made a bunch of people on Earth go
squee. But you need to tell him how you feel.”
For once the actress looked flustered. “I…I couldn’t, he’s so brave and strong…”
Chao’s voice sounded out like the slamming of a vault door. “Stop. I had the same problem. I was into someone who was brave and strong. Not as big as Ravindar, but then again few people are. Then I found out he was into me too, but because he thought I was smart. I’m not as smart as he thinks I am, but I’m not going to tell him that.”
Parvati glanced into the rear of the landing boat, where Martinez was in the midst of puttering around with the human and alien crew. The actress now looked thoughtful. “I see.”
“All I’m saying is, you don’t need to be exactly in-sync in terms of what you see in each other.” Chao smiled. “Heck, you might even find out that you’re in-sync in ways you didn’t see coming.”
The dark-haired Indian fixed Chao with a stare. “I sense there is a story somewhere in there that you’re not telling me. Ah well, as you say it can wait until we are all no longer under the camera’s gaze.”
__________
Master Sergeant Wilkes smiled down at the spidery alien. “Kifa, there’s someone I’d like you to meet. Consider it part of your helping us to train. This person made a living while driving one of the highest, fastest aircraft we’ve ever made.”
“Oooh!” Kifa looked very pleased at the idea. “That’s a good area to focus on! Where orbital mechanics and aircraft mechanics meet.”
“Indeed.” Wilkes nodded at the near door. “You may come in, sir.”
A man walked in, his face stretched taut in the way which only scar tissue can appear.
Kifa peered up at him. “Forgive me, this is probably very insensitive, but…were you injured?”
He laughed. “I sure was! Burned to a fare-thee-well!”
“Oh, I am so sorry!”
He smiled. “No need to be sorry. Hey, do you want a headpat? Word on the street is your species like that sort of thing.”
The xyrax rocked back and forth on its legs. “Well, a human headpat is always welcome….”
The man reached up and wiggled his fingers, making a great show that his pinky had full range of motion. “See this? Pure miracle that I can do that. The surgeon putting my hand back together, just on a whim, decided to put a pin in here so’s that my pinky finger can grasp properly. Good thing too, otherwise I would’ve never made it through the physical training.”
He then reached forth and with that rebuilt hand dispensed quite a few righteous headpats onto Kifa. After a mutual moment of happy bonding, the xyrax spoke again.
“What training were you pursuing?”
“The same thing you and I are gonna be doing for a week or so.” His eyes, narrowed with scar tissue, lit up. “My dear Kifa, I’m gonna make you into a Sled Driver. God willing and the creek don’t rise, we might get to do it for real and not just in the simulators. They’re already pulling a bunch of Blackbirds out of mothballs. Hell, even the Russians are offering us titanium for building new ones. Seems like everybody’s got a fire lit under their kiester.”
Kifa’s eyes, already big and black, got even bigger. “What is a Sled Driver?”
“Why, it’s only the best profession on the planet, my little blue-furred friend. We get to
go fast.”
__________
Joachim regarded the cylindrical, human-sized tank with some trepidation. It looked far too much like a transparent coffin. “You want to stick me in that thing?”
Zawahir nodded. “I know it’s a lot to ask, sir. It is entirely up to you, in the end. But if this works…” He waved at the tank. “If this works, then you will emerge from that tank physically in your twenties.”
They both regarded the tank for a moment, which was full of a clear and, at the moment, a very
exclusive liquid.
“Corina too, of course,” said Joachim as he leaned back in his wheelchair. “If it works on me first.” He still wasn’t quite sure where he was; there had been a lot of back-and-forth with planes and whatnot.
“Of course,” said Zawahir. “That goes without saying.”
“Then the two people injured in the DC attack. This will regrow their limbs, correct?”
“Well, naturally.” Zawahir smirked. “They’re the Borlaug Institute’s big publicity stunt, after all. Testing on two people before-hand should be enough to let us know if it’ll work on them.”
“Of course.” Joachim gazed at the tank. “I’ll do it, on one condition.”
“Name it.”
“If…if I don’t come out okay, I want everyone to know that I tried, right? And I do mean everyone. All of humanity.”
“I’m just one person. At the moment, I can only promise that I’ll say what I can.”
After a moment, Joachim nodded. “Then put me in there. I just need to talk to Corina beforehand.”
“Of course, sir.”
__________
The blue-suited woman with a blonde pony-tail smiled as she stared into the camera. “Welcome to Summit Technologies’s livestream of Point-Counterpoint, I’m Amy Coulson. We are currently talking about and debating the latest announcements in space-based systems. As everyone is aware, this has become a source of great concern in the last month or so.” She nodded to the beige-suited man next to her. “This is Walter Higgins, formerly of TRW and who now works for Northrop-Grumman. Walter, to start with can you tell us what the current status is of the repair effort for the alien craft?”
Walt leaned forward, putting his forearms on the desk in front of them. “Well, the main concern is if the plates we’re providing for patching will actually work. So only one of the
Rithro’s boats was launched…the one with Chao Me Chu and Parvati Devdhar, they’re towing the fifteen-ton loft provided by ULA to avoid wasting too much energy. Just in case the patching doesn’t work.” He winked at the camera. “I assure you, as someone in the aerospace industry, ULA is going to be very proud of that for a good long while. Anyways, at the moment, they are approaching the L5 point and we should be able to get some spectacular pictures of, well, everything. Of the Earth from near the Moon’s orbit, of the Moon itself, and most importantly of the
Rithro.”
Amy nodded in a comradely fashion, but Walt was not fooled. He’d dealt with reporters before. “Sounds intriguing, and I’m sure everyone on Earth looks forward to such sights. But mere patching will not be enough to solve the ship’s issues, correct?”
He sighed. “You’re right. One of the ship’s fusion engines was damaged, and that limits their top speed. Think of it as…you’re a big ocean liner with three propellers, and one goes down. You might still be able to steer using just the other two, but you’re not going to be as effective or fast as you might be.”
“Effective,” she mused. “I suppose that our helping fix their fusion drive is among those bits of alien tech currently prohibited?”
“Yes. I have heard some rumors that the Borlaug Institute in Iceland has had some great initial success, so I hope that soon we will be able to tackle the fusion drive problem.”
She stared at him a bit, which he knew was a bit of theatricality. “Such a repair would make them more capable against these so-called ‘Breakers’, correct?”
“So-called? Now, Amy. Don’t tell me you’re agreeing with those lunatics?”
In the weeks since the simultaneous attacks, a few manifestos had cropped up online. All mostly spouted the same nonsense; at least, nonsense in Walt’s eyes. They all said the same thing; that the Breakers were fake. That this whole rigamarole was a false flag effort by the Coalition, one intended to get all of humanity under their thumb.
“I don’t agree with them,” said Amy, to her credit. “I’m merely stating the other side of the conflict. Yes, I think most people agree that there is an alien ship up at the L5 point which has been grievously damaged. I do trust the evidence of my eyes. I’m sure our two…”
“Five.”
“…five brave souls heading out to that very point at L5 will see exactly the same thing as the Hubble did. But. Have you considered, just for the sake of argument, that evidence of an attack is not evidence of Breakers? Perhaps this is some local dispute, and the crew has set up some sort of fake attack. They could intend to use us as shock troops to settle it.”
Walt leaned back in his chair as he went through the longest twenty seconds of his life. He knew things, thanks to his role. He also knew that if he spoke them aloud he would be burning his entire career right down to the waterline. “That is somewhat possible. But not probable.”
She leaned forward, as if sensing she had him on the ropes. “Why?”
“Because they didn’t need to.” His gray eyes were calm as he stared at her and measured his words. “Do you have any notion, any single clue, of the firepower that ship possesses?”
“Um…well, no, that part’s still classified.”
“I will give you a hint. They have a spinal railgun that could, with around three shots, turn any metropolitan area on earth into a molten crater. They have nuclear-tipped missiles, even one of which could burn a city to the ground. They didn’t need to play nice,
Amy. Those aliens could have stood off in orbit, smacked a few cities, and then gotten on the radio to dictate terms of our surrender. We’d have no choice but to comply.”
He stared daggers at her, half expecting some black-suited guys with earpieces to jump in and haul him away. But nothing happened, it was as if the world was holding its breath. “They did their very best to treat with us fairly, to treat us as equals.”
Amy looked away. “I…I hope that is true.”
“It is.” He glanced behind his shoulder for any Men In Black, but nobody was there so far. Maybe he should continue. He assumed a smile, one which he did not feel. “Anyways. We will see what they see, when they get there. There is, also, the international consortium’s proposal for the Sea Dragon.”
The reporter rallied, clearly grateful for the change in subject. “Ah, yes. You’ve reviewed the designs of this craft. Is it really necessary?”
“At the moment, yes. Starship holds a great deal of promise, but they’re still trying to crack the reusability and multiple-refueling issue. This design does permit reusability…of the first stage, if nothing else…but it isn’t strictly necessary for success. Success, in this case, consists of tons to orbit.”
“Why something so big, though? Won’t it be an issue?”
He chuckled, feeling surer of himself. “That’s why we’re launching it in the ocean, in the middle of nowhere.”
She actually looked troubled, so he figured he’d throw her a bone. “The first launch won’t have anything…controversial.”
“But Walt, the second launch is the issue! Nobody has launched this much radioactive material into space.”
“We need to, Amy,”
“But on an almost untested rocket? From a design which is decades old?”
“We have top people on it,” said Walt. “Including people from that era, who know exactly the pitfalls and also have access to modern technology.”
“Which people?”
“It’s still secret as to their identities. But like I said, I can confirm rumors that the Borlaug Institute is already paying significant dividends.”
Amy rolled her eyes. “Over a billion dollars funneled into a figurative black hole in Iceland. Why would you believe anything they say?”
“They’re going to have some serious proof soon,” said Walt.
__________
Iceland. Joachim had never, ever expected to visit Iceland. But yet here he was…again. He stood with no cane, with nothing supporting him but his own two legs. He stared at a nearby volcanic massif, one covered with green lichen. The spring was coming in, and the ground around him was similarly strewn with fuzzy green growth. His beard and hair were now coming in dark again, with only a hint of gray at the tips to betray his true age.
He heard some light-footed steps coming up the trail behind him. It must be Zawahir.
“Why the hell am I back in Iceland?” Joachim replied.
"This is where the tech is, at least for the moment. How are you feeling, sir?”
“I feel…like my old self, Zawahir. I forgot what it was like to have knees that don’t hurt anymore. How is Corina’s, er, ‘tanking’ proceeding?”
“Very well, sir. I am overseeing the procedure of her ‘tanking’ myself, I just wanted to come and let you know that everything is looking good.”
Joachim looked down at the back of his hand. It was no longer wrinkled, no longer showed a welter of age spots. “When?”
“She should be out in…seventy-two hours. That’s how long it took you.”
“Good to know.” He turned to face Zawahir. “My friend, I am going to need every single internet connection you have for the next seventy-two hours. I have a lot of design work to take care of in that time frame; I will need to have a lot of meetings using those oh-so-clever ‘online’ apps. I’ll be indisposed after that.”
“Sir?”
Joachim stepped forth and placed a newly-strong hand on Zawahir’s shoulder. “My dear Zawahir. I am now physically twenty again. In the next three days my wife, the love of my life and she who I hold dear above all else, will also emerge from your magic alien goo and she will also be physically twenty years old. What do you think will happen after she is thus reborn?”
Zawahir’s eyes widened. “Oh. OH! Yes, of course. Please, follow me.”
Joachim chuckled to himself as he followed the man towards the low-roofed buildings of the Borlaug Institute in the distance.
__________
Chao was now clad back in her pressure suit; fortunately, the aliens were quite adept at helping the humans back into their cloth-and-glass cocoons. She looked over at Parvati. “Neil can bite us.”
Parvati grinned. “For sure. Neil was a very great man, but sadly he never got to see an alien starship.”
Chao checked the readout at her wrist, ensuring that she was indeed sealed up and pressurized. She looked over at her four fellow humans, and received nods in return. “We’re go, Captain Sadaf.”
The on-board crew of the
Rithro were now back in their chromed, faceted hardsuits. “Depressurizing,” said Sadaf. “Please monitor those to either side, sing out if you see any stress.”
Chao reminded herself to breathe normally as things just got…quiet. Very quiet. She managed, through sheer willpower, to not have an utter panic attack as she realized that there was nothing between her and a life-sucking
nothing except for a few layers of fabric and plastic.
She glanced over at Parvati, who looked to be also in the midst of trying (and fortunately succeeding) at combating her own panic attack behind her Plexiglas helmet. “Doing okay?” asked Chao, and immediately felt like an idiot for asking such a stupid question.
Still, Parvati nodded. Chao felt a tap at her shoulder, and looked over at Martinez. The corporal grinned at her from behind his own transparent head-cocoon. “Doing okay?” he asked with just the right bit of cheekiness.
Chao slapped his shoulder, but it was a playful slap. “Dipshit.” She forgot, in the moment, that she was begin transmitted live to the world. Her curse was thus broadcast to pretty much every kid on the planet, who then gleefully repeated her curse-word until they all got smacked by their parents.
She didn’t know that at the time, her entire world was the airlock door that now opened to reveal…black.
Utter black.
Chao had enough experience in zero-g maneuvering to push herself towards the door. “Oh. Man. Folks, this is it. Gonna step outside, for at least a little bit.”
She could feel both Martinez on one side and Sadaf on the other. The latter figured; the captain struck Chao as a ‘lead from the front’ type.
“Grip the frame,” said Sadaf. Through the translator bead her voice was deadly calm. “No big muscle movements, just kind of…drift where you want to go.”
Chao obediently swung herself up and out of the boat, reveling in the fact that now she was seeing the
Exultant Finger of Rithro in real time. The long ship stretched alongside a clamshell-like shield, its radiators stretched out towards the Earth in a gesture of surrender.
Speaking of which…
Chao kept a firm hold on the doorframe as she looked behind her. A small, fragile, blue-and-white marble floated before her, a sphere which looked to be the size of her thumb-tip held at arm’s length. Chao did so with her free gloved hand, watching her thumb occlude that fragile-loooking sphere. And in that moment, her world was completely changed.
It is one thing to know a fact. It is one thing to meet aliens, to accept that they are from oh so very far away, that your world is but one little dust mote drifting in the vast and limitless cosmic ocean. But it is quite another to see that fact laid bare before you, where you can witness it in real-time through nothing but a Pexiglas helmet. Chao now knew. Everyone she’d ever known, everyone she’d ever heard of, every king or warlord or emperor or internet celebrity who anyone had ever heard of had lived down there, upon a sphere that looked to her like the most ephemeral of soap-bubbles. She had the crazy notion that she could just reach out one gloved finger and pop it.
She also knew that millions, perhaps billions, were watching this live via her bodycam. Perhaps they were going through the same epiphany.
Her breath caught in her throat, and she knew she was on the verge of tears. No, that was a bad thing. She was in freefall; there was no way for those tears to stream down her face. They would just collect over her eyes and blind her. So Chao breathed in deep and managed to tamp down those threatened tears.
“Chao?” called out Sadaf through her comm. “Are you all right?”
“I’m good, Captain. Just…next time…, we send up a poet.”
__________
Shaw hated, hated, hated having to use a wheelchair to get around. Most of the time he could wheel himself around using his substantial arms, but every so often the nursing staff would try to get oh so helpful and try to push him towards where he was going. Several of them had nearly lost limbs of their own thanks to such efforts.
Still, he was alive and that was a good thing. Although…watching Agent Milton Vila and his family, who were nearby as he went through his own convalescence, made Shaw reevaluate his life choices. It would be nice to have a wife and kid to hug while one went through the worst thing ever. But he was too old, such things were well behind him. While on autopilot, Shaw wheeled himself down the tiled and very off-white hallway with a sour air. One which told the entire staff that he was Not To Be Disturbed. He was thinking of a particular girl, one with the cutest pigtails and the sunniest smile. Yeah, she would have been the one, if he’d had his head on straight back then.
And then, in spite of his ‘Fuck the Fuck Off energy’, someone did block his path.
He stared at a pair of narrow legs, clad in narrow pants, then looked up with a distinct lack of humor. “I do believe you are in my way.”
The dark-skinned man blocking his path smiled, but it was a gentle smile. “I am. But, I am very sure you will want to hear my offer. Both you and Agent Vila.”
Shaw regarded him with gimlet eyes. “Oh, really? What’s your name?”
“I’m Zawahir Ibn Harith. I am the head of the…”
“I don’t give a single solitary fuck,” said Shaw. “I’ve had plenty of people trying to get me to tell them my life story since I got my leg removed with extreme prejudice. I don’t know how you got in here, but you strike me as someone just like them, Harith. So. I may be minus one leg, but I can still fuck you up but good. I can fuck you up so bad you’ll never shit right again. Do you wanna get out of my way now?”
The man’s smile didn’t change. “Borlaug Institute.”
“What. Really?”
“Really, sir. Both you and Agent Milton Vila. It sounds…very cynical, but you were the two that we wanted to heal first. As an object lesson to humanity. Do you understand?”
The notion made Shaw’s mind reel. “Heal?”
“Fully. We have successfully restored two people to the prime of life, and we are now certain that we can do the same for you and Agent Vila. With all of your limbs intact. We have done a great many tissue-sample experiments, and it appears that the regeneration also re-grows limbs.”
Shaw looked down at his missing lower leg. “And you’ll do the same for Milton?”
“Of course, sir.”
“Stop calling me sir, I work for a living. Call me Mack.”
“Very well…Mack. I won’t lie to you, this has been planned well in advance. But it turned out that limb re-growth for humans also unlocked certain regeneration within our cells, particularly the telomeres…”
Shaw held up a meaty hand. “Just…I’m a dumb grunt in such matters, don’t bother to tell me how it works. So you have some kind of magic goo that you slather over me and hey presto I’m twenty again?”
“That is more or less the shape of it, si…Mack. You will need to be immersed in the ‘magic goo’ for at least three days. Perhaps more, since this will also be regenerating a limb.”
“Either way, I go first,” said Shaw, with a flinty glare up at Zawahir. “I’m the test subject, and you need to test me good after I get re-birthed from your goop. I know you said you’d done it on two people, but we need to make sure this doesn’t give me some kind of bullshit super-cancer before Milton goes in. He’s got a wife and a kid. If he has to use a prosthetic instead of magic alien goo, then he has to use that instead. Understand?”
Zawahir gave Shaw a little bow. “Of course. I do believe you are quite the appropriate test subject.”
“Oh, go fuck yourself. Where is this shindig taking place, anyway?”

2023.06.10 01:30 NotTheBatman Battle of Red Mountain and Convention
The more I read about Convention and the Battle of Red Mountain the more parallels I notice, and it seems to me that they're (nearly) identical events with different players. This probably isn't a surprise to anyone reading this, since this parallel is even suggested in-universe, but there are some parallels that I've never seen anyone make here before.
I think that the chimer and dwemer purposefully constructed the sequence of events at Red Mountain to recreate convention. Dagoth Ur was tasked to tell the nords about the heart to lure Shor's ghost to battle. Bethesda's lore event from the 10th Skyrim anniversary provide even more backing for these theories.
I'll start by outlining the obvious parallels.
Parallel Pieces
Battle of Red Mountain = Convention. They are parallel events. Some theories take this even further and say they are the same event, thanks to dragon breaking, but I don't interpret that as being literally true.
Dwemer = Aldmer. Both play the role of the advanced eleven society trying to escape the arena that is Nirn, and reclaim their rightful godhood. Both societies reject the limitations of Nirn. Both societies are noted for living technologically advanced city states.
Dumac = Auriel. Auriel is the high king of the Aldmer who calls Convention. Dumac is the high king of the dwemer who calls the Battle of Red Mountain.
Numidium and Red Mountain = Adamantia. The fact that there are two co-located towers here is a bit unique, but both contain their stones underground and are where their respective conventions take place. We don't know what the Zero Stone is, but it could be something similar to the dwemer's act of denial against existence.
Dumac/NerevaAlandro Sul = Trinimac. Tri-Nymic, three names. The identity of the original Trinimac is one of the greatest mysteries of the lore, with many potential trios being suggested. I propose that the original Trinimac was Auriel/Malacath/Xarxes, which means...
Nerevar = Malacath, and the Dunmer = Orcs. Two leaders who teach the merits of adversity, who wants to see their followers grow through hardship. Two leaders who were betrayed. Two races who were cursed by Daedra into twisted forms, as a reminder of their betrayals.
Alandrol Sul = Xarxes. Both famously act as scribes who record the great sagas of their society, and are known to have recorded deep secrets forgotten by the rest of their race. This parallels well with the Ashlanders keeping the true history of their race alive, when history was re-written by the Tribunal.
Azura = Boethiah. Azura curses the Chimer to create the Dunmer, Boethiah curses the Aldmer to create the Orcs.
Kagrenac = Magnus. Both are famed architects who created powerful tools of creatia, and both promptly left creation after convention. What's more, they even left behind tools of anti-creation, as seen in...
Numidium = Eye of Magnus. If Kagrenac the architect had to build a reality-destroying robot in order to ascend creation, it stands that Magnus had to do something similar. The Winterhold Questline may not have been well fleshed out, but we know the Eye is an ancient artifact able to inflict great damage on Winterhold and is covered in script that doesn't match any other known writings. The questline was also supposed to involve some time travel shenanigans, so it wouldn't have been out of place at a dragon break.
Battle of Red Mountain
I'm going lay out my views of the events of the Battle of Red Mountain. I think most versions of the story are mostly true, except the Tribunal's, which I'll discount entirely. Vivec admits himself in his sermons that it's all blatant lies, so I don't think we have to bring any multiple timelines shenanigans into play here.
Dagoth Ur is also telling his warped version of the truth, but never tells any direct lies. The nords tell a version that is mostly true, but it's biased by their views of the elves and their lack of witnesses after the battle. The Ashlanders account is again mostly true, but misses some finer details that Alandrol Sul wouldn't have witnessed directly.
I think that the dwemer found the heart, and wished to use it to transcend Mundus. Kagrenac created his tools, bound the heart, and constructed Numidium, but the heart was lacking a sufficient divine spark. I think to truly transcend Mundus they had to let Shor obtain the heart so that they could again slay him, faithfully recreating convention and re-powerinf the heart. To do this they enlisted the help of the chimer.
I don't know if Nerevar and the chimer were in on the plan from the start, or if the dwemer used Dagoth Ur as a double agent to contact the Nords to force the issue of the alliance. Based on Dagoth Ur's apparent (though insane) sincerity in Morrowind, his love for Nerevar, I'm inclined to think the chimer joined the plan willingly. The would have been happy to break the nords militarily and slay their god. Nerevar was also a personal friend of Dumac, and also would have seen that forcing the dwemer to stay in Mundus would only lead to more conflicts between their people.
During the battle itself it's stated that Dumac/NerevaAlandrol Sul fought together and wielded SundeKeening/Wraithguard. All three were stated to be wounded in some manner, with Alandrol Sul being blinded, but together they were able to defeat Shor and cut out his heart, killing him and driving out the invaders in the process. In this act they mantled Trinimac and recreated the battle at Convention. Specifically it's mentioned that Nerevar is the one to cut our the heart using Keening, just how it's stated that Trinimac is the one to have ripped out the heart at convention.
Parallels to Convention After the Battle
With the heart now fully powered with its divine spark the dwemer were able to enact their plans. Using the heart, the tools, and Numidium, they transcend Mundus (successfully?) in full view of the chimer. The exact details of this event are never given, but I assumed that is was witnessed by at least Nerevar, Dagoth Ur, and the Tribunal. They would have no reason to hide the process, since they had no qualms about leaving the tools and Numidium behind in the first place. The fact that Nerevar, who was close to Dumac, was even considering using the tools means he did not view doing somas a betrayal of the dwemer.
The ascension of Dumac/Kagrenac/dwemer mirrors how Auriel/Magnus/Magna Ge ascended to Aetherius in full view of the elves after Convention, so that they could know the path to the heavens. They willingly left the knowledge of ascension behind for others to make use of, hence the existence of the Forgotten Vale and the Chantry of Auriel.
What's more, the relationship between Dumac and Kagrenac mirrors that of Auriel and Magnus. Architect and King, separate entities though very closely related. Auriel's own artifacts wield the power of the sun created by Magnus, just as Dumac wielded the tools created by Kagrenac.
While the dwemer choose to ascend, Nerevar entrusts the tools to Dagoth Ur while he takes council with the Tribunal. Here he decides not to use the heart, but to keep with the Velothi tradition of staying in Mundus and growing through suffering. He returns to the heart chamber to find Dagoth Ur tampering with the heart, and so he kills him. He is then betrayed and killed by the Tribunal, for which Azura curses the Chimer and turns them into Dunmer.
While we don't have the necessary details to draw an exact comparison to Convention, this broadly mirrors the birth of Malacath from Trinimac at the hands of Boethiah, and the creation of the Orcs. I think Malacath fought alongside Auriel and the Aldmer as one aspect of Trinimac, but afterwards his faction of Aldmer decided to stay in Mundus and committed some act of betrayal. To be specific, I think Malacath may have been a mortal Aldmer who decided to stay in Mundus, and then was murdered by his followers. He then ascended to Godhood through his martyrdom.
While this sounds a bit out of left field, we now know that this exact thing happened to Nerevar. Bethesda confirmed at their Skyrim 10th anniversary event that the Nerevarine was the reincarnation of a God, and not just a random mortal scooped up by fate like the CoC. Maybe he is not on the same level as a Daedric Prince, or maybe his ascensions simply took a different form (he was killed in a very ritualistic and deliberate manner by the Tribunal) but we know he ascended fully to some form of divinity through his actions at Red Mountain.
Alandro Sul is left as the witness to the events of the battle, though he did not witness the ascension or Nerevar's murder on account of his blindness. He does however pass his teachings to the Ashlanders, who hold to his secret account of the battle. In death he is revered as the "Son of Azura", and may have ascended to some form of divinity. This mirrors Xarxes role as a scribe during convention, and how he specifically is a scribe of aldmeri sagas just how Sul is a scribe of chimer and dunmer sagas.
Conjecture
Finally, I have some parallels that are not quite as well supported but that I think are interesting.
The reenactment of Trinimac helps explain the confusion of Xarxes/Arkay/Orkey/Dumalacath. All figures were part of Trinimac, and by mantling the original Trinimac during a dragon break these figures may have become somewhat indistinguishable.
The Trinimac of Convention likely wielded artifacts that allowed them to cut the heart from Shor just as the Trinimac of Red Mountain did with SundeKeening/Wraithguard. Keeping with the Kagrenac/Magnus parallels, I think that we can narrow this down to some combination of Auriel's Bow/Auriel's Shield/Staff of Magnus/Mehrunes' Razor. I think the Razor and Keening the most obvious parallel. The Razor was forged in Lyg (previous Kalpa) by Magnus (presumably), and then used by the Magna Ge to potentially cut the heart from Shor and ascend to divinity.
The staff and shield may have acted as Sunder and Wraithguard. We know the staff has the power to contain great sources of energy such as the Eye of Magnus. Perhaps the Staff was used to stabilize the heart so it could be cut out by the Razor. The Eye of Magnus may also have acted as (at least part of) the Magna Ge's version of Numidium. The only problem with this theory is if the Razor was created in Lyg in the previous Kalpa and given to Dagon, it may not have been available to the Magna Ge during Convention.
There also seems to be a theme during Convention of needing 3 things to ascend to godhood: a tower, Shor's heart, and some sort of powerful timey-wimey machine that is capable of creating a dragon break. The Magna Ge rose from Adamantia, and potentially left behind the Eye of Magnus. The Dwemer ascended at Red Mountain and left behind Numidium. I wonder if the towers act as a stepping stone of sorts. Perhaps by killing Shor and initiating a dragon break (using the Eye of Magnus or Numidium) allows one to use the Towers to climb to divinity. Mannimarco and Tiber Septum are both able to ascend to Godhood using the Numidium (or at least the Mantella), although the details again are unclear.
The biggest issue I have with my theory is where are the dwemer and Nerevar now? If they recreated the events of Convention then why aren't they the new gods of this cycle, or at least on the status of Tiber Septim? Perhaps the answer is that their convention was very controlled, as they only let Shor reclaim his heart for a very short period of time. Maybe it's because Alduin was cast out of time, and no world-eating was able to occur this time. Maybe it's because the dwemer chose ascend in a different manner than the Aldmer did, or maybe they go it wrong and simply zero-summer themselves. Either way, we won't know unless a future game explores the concept further.
Tldr: The events at Red Mountain play out almost identically to convention. This may be purposeful by all of the players involved. Maybe the dwemer just recreated exactly what the Aldmeri did at convention, and are chilling somewhere free from the shackles of creation.

2023.06.10 00:56 Glittering-Sock966 Imperium, Plus Ultra. Chapter 5
I would like to receive recommendations or grammatical errors as English is not my first language and I will probably have several mistakes.
First!/
Previous!/next
---------------------------------------
In the vast streets of the capital of the Burgundy Sidereal Empire, was David Kessler, an ordinary citizen who worked as an engineer in one of the empire's factories. Since the incident on the human ship and the galactic tensions that arose from it, David began to experience a growing doubt within him.
As he walked through the crowded avenues, David watched the towering skyscrapers and the emperor's banners towering over the city. His loyalty to the empire had been questioned after learning of the violent acts committed in the emperor's name.
The news came constantly through the government-controlled media. Messages glorifying conquest and expansion were spread, but tensions with other species and actions taken by the emperor to ensure the dominance of the empire were also mentioned.
David couldn't help but wonder if this was the right thing to do. Was it fair to impose the will of his empire at the cost of the peace and freedom of other beings? News of the meeting at the Intergalactic Grand Council and Ambassador Xar'lon's words echoed through his mind.
Determined to find answers, David embarked on a personal search for the truth. He began to investigate on his own, gathering information from independent sources and connecting with other citizens who shared his doubts and concerns.
As he delved into his research, David discovered tales of brave humans who had advocated for peace and cooperation with other species. With each story and testimony, his conviction grew stronger. He began to question the emperor's actions and to harbor hopes of a change in the direction of the empire.
But his search for the truth did not go unnoticed. The eyes and ears of the empire were everywhere, and David soon found himself under the suspicion of the authorities. Fear began to haunt him, but his determination did not fade. He was willing to take the necessary risks for what he believed in.
In an unexpected twist of fate, David was arrested and accused of treason against the emperor. He was brought before an imperial court, where he was denied the right to a fair defense. The charges were fabricated, and the evidence rigged. The verdict was already decided in advance.
Sentenced to death, David was escorted to the place of execution. In his dying moments, as the crowd's eyes fell on him, David bravely raised his voice.
"Humanity will truly begin to deserve its name the day the exploitation of other races has ceased!" he exclaimed with determination, defying the oppressive regime that had condemned him.
His words echoed through the air, challenging the darkness that had covered the empire. Though David faced his impending doom, his message of hope and justice had reached the hearts of those who still clung to faith in a better world.
The chapter concludes with the echo of David's words and the image of him being erased from existence, but his spirit lingers in the souls of those who yearn for change. In the next chapter, we'll explore the perspective of an alien who has witnessed the actions of the Burgundy Sidereal Empire and how his experience has driven him to desperate measures in his fight for freedom.

2023.06.10 00:20 entrenest Will Donald Trump go to Prison?
| TL;DR: Yes, 88 to 94% chance of a prison conviction using Bayes' theorem. Source: ChatGPT-4 I cannot answer that question with certainty, as the outcome of the case depends on many factors, such as the evidence, the jury, the judge, the defense strategy, the public opinion, and the possible appeals. However, based on the information I have available, I can estimate the probability of Mr. Trump being sent to prison over this case using a Bayesian approach. First, I need to assign a prior probability to the event of Mr. Trump being sent to prison over this case, based on some general knowledge and assumptions. For example, I can use the historical data on the conviction rate and incarceration rate of federal defendants in the U.S., which are about 90% and 70%, respectively. I can also consider the fact that Mr. Trump is a former president, which may give him some advantages or disadvantages in the legal system. For simplicity, I will assume that his status as a former president does not affect his chances of being convicted or incarcerated significantly. Therefore, I will assign a prior probability of 63% (0.9 x 0.7) to the event of Mr. Trump being sent to prison over this case. Next, I need to update this prior probability using the new evidence that has emerged from the investigation and the indictment. For example, I can use the number and severity of the charges, the credibility and testimony of the witnesses, the strength and weakness of the prosecution and defense arguments, and the public reaction and opinion on the case. For simplicity, I will assume that each piece of evidence has an independent and equal impact on the probability of Mr. Trump being sent to prison over this case. Therefore, I will use a simple formula to update the prior probability using a likelihood ratio for each piece of evidence: P(A∣B)=P(B∣A)+P(B∣¬A)P(B∣A)×P(A) where P(A∣B) is the posterior probability of Mr. Trump being sent to prison over this case (A) given a piece of evidence (B), P(B∣A) is the likelihood of observing that piece of evidence if Mr. Trump is sent to prison over this case, P(B∣¬A) is the likelihood of observing that piece of evidence if Mr. Trump is not sent to prison over this case, and P(A) is the prior probability of Mr. Trump being sent to prison over this case. For example, one piece of evidence is that Mr. Trump has been indicted on seven charges related to his handling of classified documents. This may increase the probability of him being sent to prison over this case, as it indicates that there is sufficient evidence to bring him to trial and that he faces serious penalties if convicted. However, it may also decrease the probability of him being sent to prison over this case, as it may trigger a public backlash or sympathy for him and motivate his defense team to fight harder or negotiate a plea deal. For simplicity, I will assume that this piece of evidence has a slightly positive impact on the probability of him being sent to prison over this case. Therefore, I will assign a likelihood ratio of 1.1 to this piece of evidence. According to the web search results, the conviction rate and incarceration rate for espionage act violations are not readily available, as this is a rare and complex type of crime that has been used in different ways over time. However, some sources suggest that the conviction rate for espionage act violations is very high, as most defendants plead guilty or are found guilty at trial[ 1] [2]. The incarceration rate for espionage act violations may vary depending on the severity of the offense, the sentencing guidelines, and the discretion of the judge. Some sources indicate that the average prison sentence for espionage act violations is about 10 years [ 2] [3] but it could be higher or lower depending on the circumstances. Therefore, based on these sources, I will assign a prior probability of 80% to the event of Mr. Trump being sent to prison over this case, based on the assumption that he faces a high likelihood of conviction and incarceration for violating the espionage act and other related statutes. - I assigned a new prior probability of 80% to the event of Mr. Trump being sent to prison over this case, based on the data relevant to the infraction rather than total average conviction rate.
- I updated this prior probability using the piece of evidence that Mr. Trump has been indicted on seven charges related to his handling of classified documents. I assigned a slightly positive likelihood ratio of 1.1 to this piece of evidence, based on the same assumption as before. Using the formula above, I calculated the posterior probability as:
P(A∣B)=1.1+11.1×0.8=0.82 - I updated this prior probability using the piece of evidence that Mr. Trump has been indicted on seven charges related to his handling of classified documents, with 31 counts for one charge. I assigned a more positive likelihood ratio of 1.2 to this piece of evidence, based on the new assumption as before. Using the formula above, I calculated the posterior probability as:
P(A∣B)=1.2+11.2×0.8=0.84 This means that after considering this piece of evidence, the probability of Mr. Trump being sent to prison over this case increases from 80% to 84%. - I updated this posterior probability using the piece of evidence that Mark Meadows has testified before a grand jury as part of the investigation and has testified against his former boss in exchange for a plea bargain with the DOJ. I assigned a very positive likelihood ratio of 2 to this piece of evidence, based on the same assumption as before. Using the formula above, I calculated the posterior probability as:
P(A∣B)=2+12×0.84=0.94 This means that after considering this piece of evidence, the probability of Mr. Trump being sent to prison over this case increases from 84% to 94%. - I updated this posterior probability using the piece of evidence that Mr. Trump has denied any wrongdoing and called the investigation a “witch hunt”. I assigned a neutral likelihood ratio of 1 to this piece of evidence, based on the same assumption as before. Using the formula above, I calculated the posterior probability as:
P(A∣B)=1+11×0.94=0.94 This means that after considering this piece of evidence, the probability of Mr. Trump being sent to prison over this case remains unchanged at 94%. - I updated this posterior probability using the piece of evidence that Mr. Trump has a large and loyal base of supporters who may rally behind him and protest against his prosecution. I assigned a slightly negative likelihood ratio of 0.9 to this piece of evidence, based on the same assumption as before. Using the formula above, I calculated the posterior probability as:
P(A∣B)=0.9+10.9×0.94=0.88 This means that after considering this piece of evidence, the probability of Mr. Trump being sent to prison over this case decreases from 94% to 88%. - I stopped here and gave my final answer.
Based on these calculations, I estimate that the probability of Mr. Trump being sent to prison over this case is 88%. Please note that this is only an estimate based on some assumptions and simplifications, and it may change as new information becomes available or as the case progresses. This is not a definitive prediction or a legal opinion, and it should not be taken as such. submitted by entrenest to ChatGPT [link] [comments] |
2023.06.10 00:16 Marvynwillames [Excerpt - Dark Heresy The Inquisitor's Handbook] The multiple facets of the Imperial Cult
From time to time its asked just how tolerant the Imperium is, how this galaxy wide government imposes its faith. With how large the Imperium is, and how inneficient the FTL travel and communication is, its only natural that the faith isnt uniform. But, how does said faith varies? What is and what isn't allowed. In the excerpt, we can see some explanations
A Life of Worship
The Emperor has a profound effect in the lives of the people he protects. To most, He is everywhere and everything. Part of every citizen’s life is to honour the Emperor, often on a daily basis, for the protection and guidance that He provides. How they honour Him, however, will of course vary depending on where they live and just how they choose to view the Emperor. For example, on the world of Acreage, the priests of the High King teach that the Emperor is the “King of the Sky”; sky-mill workers must keep there eyes averted from the heavens when they work high above the ground, lest they anger Him with their impudence. Villages often make “candle-balloons” in which to offer their prayers. On the mining world of Luggnum, the pit-shafts are so dangerous that all miners undertake hour-long blessings by the station abbot before they descend. Miners that have refused or avoided such blessings are scorned (or even killed) by their co-workers, lest they bring ill-luck to all, proving that perhaps the blessing does in fact protect from harm. Then there are worlds like Dwimlicht, a feral world far from the civilized core of the sector, where primitive locals see the Emperor as a mighty star-god and shave their heads so that at night He might look into their minds with His million eyes and see that they are faithful.
Whatever the world’s particular teachings, almost universally, citizens pray before work, before meals and before downtime. They thank the Emperor for what they have and pray to Him for what they desire. As most citizens of the Imperium are poorly educated, often knowing only what they need to do their jobs, prayer and the teachings of the Ministorum are all they know of the galaxy or world beyond their homes. They often believe wholeheartedly that if they do not pray to the Emperor and follow the instructions of His clerics, they risk their very souls (a belief unfortunately justified on many worlds). Over time, citizens become entwined in the rituals of worship, so that daily prayers to the Emperor are as natural to them as breathing. For most, this is as far as they come in their religious observance, convinced of their faith, living and dying without ever questioning the Ministorum or the god it serves.
Of course there are those who stray from the path. Paying no more than lip service to the Imperial Creed, these people forget their faith (if indeed they ever had it) and instead choose to see the Emperor as a distant overlord, ruling an empire that He will never see from a state of neither death nor life. Such folk choose to live by their own set of morals and ethics, though usually they have little of either. On many advanced worlds these kinds of people thrive. Where the rise of technology has overshadowed spirituality and wonder, so too does it undermine the belief in a power greater than mankind. Such places can be breeding grounds for the faithless or for those that would scorn the power of the Emperor for more tangible and immediate rewards.
For many citizens, however, the truth is, as always, somewhere between fevered worship and the brink of heresy. Most citizens pray at their local shrine once a ten-cycle, and invoke the Emperor’s name to protect them from evil; but beyond this they go about their daily lives like everybody else.
A Question of Faith
Just what your PC believes, when it comes to the Imperial Creed is up to you. All Acolytes have been raised in the shadow of the Cult of the Emperor and cannot doubt His influence and the power of the Imperium. However, deciding to accept or reject any of the myriad of nuances making up His religion, such as the stock placed in certain saints or the best way to interpret His will, is up to you to decide. The following questions may be used to help you round out your character’s religious beliefs.
How was the Emperor revered on your home world?
The worship of the Emperor varies greatly from world to world and, quite often different cultures focus on a key aspect of His power. For instance, on an agri-world it might be the grace of the Emperor that protects and nurtures their crops and villages, while keeping them safe in the night. Hence the population would view Him as a benevolent figure that guides and shelters them. Alternatively on a penal world, the Emperor is a harsh judge and overseer who weighs your every deed and strikes you down if you are found wanting. Here the population would view Him as an unquestionable overlord to be obeyed and feared. These various experiences colour how you see the Emperor and His role in your character’s life; even though your circumstances may have now changed, you remember the mighty Star-God or glowering statues of your childhood.
Were there any saints on your home world?
Many worlds have their own saints, whether sanctioned by the Ecclesiarchy or not. This helps people to better relate to the Emperor and His Creed. After all, at one time or another, saints were humans who lived, struggled and died in His name. If your character grew up on a world where the Ecclesiarchy was strong, it is likely that he or she would have also been taught about some of the many saints of the Imperium and be able to name each of the twenty-three trials of Quirdas, or tell the story of Kinorr the Pure and the three-armed Ork for instance. You would also have been taught about any local saints, such as the founder of your world (provided he was not a foul traitor who resisted the Imperium in any way). All this, of course, is not to say that a character born far from the schooling of the Ecclesiarchy could not come from a world blessed by saints. In many primitive cultures, for instance, the first warrior to approach the skyship when it landed is credited for “welcoming” the Emperor to their world (whether he got a bolt shell for his troubles or not).
Are there any saints that you personally identify with?
Where the Cult of the Emperor is strong, so too is the influence of its saints. On such devout worlds, when a child first receives the blessing of the Emperor it is not uncommon for the residing cleric to choose a saint to watch over the infant, sometimes adding the saint’s name to that of the child. These guardian saints are said to follow the person through his life, helping him to overcome his problems and finally, when he dies, usher him into the Emperor’s light. Sometimes, people come to have a guardian saint through other means, such as a man who nearly drowns taking up the worship of Epps the Unwell, saint of dangerous environments, for example. So it is possible, either though his upbringing or a chance event, that your character may have a very close relationship with one or more saints, praying to them regularly and looking to them for guidance in times of need.
How do you believe people should best serve the Emperor?
The people of the Imperium are often taught that they serve the Emperor in everything they do, whether it is vanquishing His foes or cleaning bilges on His cargo ships. However, most citizens of the Imperium believe that certain tasks please the Emperor more than others. For example, many believe that there is no greater service to the Emperor than killing His foes, be they aliens, heretics or witches. These people claim that His favour can only be found by wading through a sea of xenos blood. Others extol the virtues of self-deprivation and abstinence, claiming that the true light of the Emperor can only be found within our frail mortal shell. These folk suggest fasting and flagellating as the means to seek His grace. Some believe that what the Emperor truly desires is souls to cry out His name in worship, demanding that His word be spread to new worlds in order to turn unbelievers from their wicked ways and into His light. Of course it can be all of these or none, and ultimately it is up to you to choose just what your character believes.
What do you believe will happen when you die?
The Imperium is a violent, perilous place where life is cheap and death is common. For citizens on even the most stable and safe of worlds, most expect a lifetime of toil that leads to an unmarked grave. For this reason, the Ministorum teaches that, through service and sacrifice to the Emperor, the faithful can find eternal peace beyond the gates of death. For many, it is enough to know that no matter how terrible their lives or the drudgery of their days, this reward awaits them. Some, however, know more than they care to about the nature of the universe and the things lurking beyond the veil of death. Acolytes often know or have seen things that can alter their perception of death and what lies beyond, all of which is tied closely to their religious outlook. It is possible that every action your character makes is a step along the path to his eternal reward at the Emperor’s side, or perhaps your Acolyte has seen too much and knows that all they have to look forward to is the chilling madness of the warp. In either case, with such a risky occupation, your character’s feelings about death can have a profound effect on his personality and how he reacts to others.
How has the Ministorum affected your life?
Finally, the most important aspect about how your character feels about the Ecclesiarchy and the worship of the Emperor comes down to how he or she was treated by those that claim to work in His name. Perhaps he was treated well by the faith, raised by caring, if strict, abbots and clerics of the Schola Progenium and he views all those who wear the mantle of the Ministorum with respect and obedience. On the other hand, your character might have seen his family and friends put to the torch for trivial crimes in the name of the Emperor by corrupt and cruel confessors, leaving him with a deep distrust of those who claim to work in His holy name. This can be made more complicated by the fact that the Ministorum is often at odds with itself, and, like the Inquisition, there are equal amounts of the faithful and the flawed in its ranks.

2023.06.10 00:09 Marvynwillames [Excerpt - Dark Heresy The Inquisitor's Handbook] The various saints of Calixis
Being this abrahanic inspired faith, the Imperial Cult if full of saints, some declared after death, some still living. We know of Saint Sabbath, we know of Saint Celestine, and how even Cain got a planet that worships him as one.
But, how does someone is declared a saint, and how they are worshipped? The following excerpts give insight on that, as well some rather unusual saint, a psyker one.
The holy
“Though they did flay her body with their blades, rend her bones to dust with their fists and consume her organs with their hungry maws, they possessed nothing that could touch her faith.” —
Excerpt from the Blessed Suffering of Saint Elana.
The Calixis Sector is full of saints, men and women who have given their lives to the glory of the Emperor. Some are very minor, only revered in a single city or town, while some can be found wherever Imperial rule extends. Large or small, saints form the human face of the Ministorum, giving worshippers something to relate to and aspire toward. Saints are also often associated with certain aspects and particular causes, such as stellar travel or guilt. Some saints are even more specialised, watching out for those that work with ill-tempered Grox for example. This means, regardless of your situation, there is always a saint watching over you and to whom you can offer a prayer of protection. The truly devout take no chances and festoon themselves with the symbols and tokens of many saints. Saints also have a prominent place in Imperial culture beyond their religious connotations. Their names can be found on everything from worlds and stellar craft to streets and children. Often something that is akin to a saint’s cause bears their name, such as a warship called the Saint Drusus (of which there are one hundred and thirteen so named to date), so it might embody some of the fierceness of its namesake. Taking all of this into account, saints form an important part of a citizen’s life, as prolific and ever-present as the Cult of the Emperor itself.
Drusus the Wrrior
Without a doubt the greatest of all the saints within the Calixis Sector, Drusus stands at the right hand of the Emperor in the hearts and minds of most Calixian citizenry. From early childhood, millions are taught the tales of the great general Drusus and his relentless armies. They learn of how he brought the light of the Emperor back to the sector and swept away the vile masses of xenos who had taken root. It is because of his efforts that the Calixis Sector exists today. The Ministorum makes sure that no one forgets his deeds and, wherever temples and shrines to the Emperor are raised, so too are statues of this saint. Likewise, few saints can boast a cult as large or powerful as Drusus and none can deny the influence that the cult has over all Calixian affairs.
Though a mighty and cunning warlord, Drusus is best remembered and revered as an honest and courageous warrior. It is this purity of faith in the Emperor and the Imperium that soldiers will pray to before heading into battle. To invoke the name of Drusus is to ask for the righteous might of the Emperor to guide your hand. On some worlds entire regiments of Guardsmen are dedicated to the saint’s name, such as the 23rd Drusus Dragoons of Clove, who spend their days in prayer to the saint when they are not battling the enemies of the Imperium. Many combat training facilities have a likeness of the saint above their entrance and cadets are required to ask Drusus for his blessing before they enter.
The greatest shrine to Drusus can be found within the Cathedral of Illumination on Scintilla. This is also the headquarters of his cult, where his followers gather from across the sector to discuss cult business. It is also the place where prospective cultists are brought to pledge their devotion to the saint, often in mass blessings many thousand strong. Within the cult, Drusus is second only to the Emperor and comes even before the leaders of the Ecclesiarchy. Of equal importance to the grand shrine on Scintilla is Maccabeus Quintus, sight of the near death of Drusus during the Angevin Crusade. Then there is Sentinel, an obscure shrine world, located in the Drusus Marches. Exactly why the world is holy to the saint is unclear; thousands make the pilgrimage there, often to die in the shadow of Drusus’s monument. It is also important to the cult, and any who would rise to the higher ranks within it must travel to the world and ask the saint’s blessing. Due to the dangers involved, reaching the world and returning safely is usually considered as “proof ” of the saint’s favour.
Vidicus the Forlorn
Vidicus lived many hundreds of years ago and had a life plagued with misfortune and disaster. According to the tales, he was a Rogue Trader—unusual stock for a saint. He is said to have explored great areas of the sector single-handedly, pushing back its boundaries. During this time, it is said he was a greedy and petty man, who sought only to exploit the worlds he discovered and expand his wealth and power. Like many men in such stories, an unfortunate event taught him the error of his ways and brought him into the light of the Emperor. In Vidicus’s case it was the abduction of his daughter by alien pirates. He became driven to find her and scoured the sector in his search. He also turned completely to the worship of the Emperor and beseeched him for His guidance. What Vidicus received, however, was one disaster after another. First, his crew tried to mutiny and he was forced to lure them into a hold and vent them to the void. Then, his ship became lost in the warp and he was almost overcome by madness before he could return to realspace. Later, he was captured by Orks and only escaped by eating his own hands in an effort to impress his captors. The tales of Vidicus’s quest for his daughter are long and numerous; however, they have two important morals. The first is that no matter how forlorn the hope that he would ever see his daughter again, he never stopped searching. The second is that no matter what adversities the galaxy threw at him, he never lost faith in guidance of the Emperor. Years after Vidicus had vanished in his quest to find his daughter (whose name has oddly never been recorded), a group of clerics wrote an exhaustive treatise on his journeys and deeds. It was from this that the Ministorum recognised his deeds and devotion to the Emperor and raised him to sainthood. Even today there are few worlds in the Calixis Sector that do not have a tale of Vidicus and the time he visited their world seeking his lost child.
Though he has no cult, Vidicus has many worshippers. Most people have been touched by tragedy at one time or another or have embarked on a risky or foolish course of action. At these times, they look to Saint Vidicus to preserve them and give them hope. Likewise his shrines can be found throughout the sector, often tucked away in the corners of larger cathedrals, littered with small offerings and prayers. Travellers also often pray to him to guide them safely to their destinations and makeshift shrines exist to him on many vessels. The saint’s name also appears in many common phrases such as, “a Vidicus hope”, meaning something with a very small chance of success, or “following Vidicus”, meaning to obsess about something unattainable. Acolytes have also been known to invoke the name of Vidicus in their missions, sometimes scratching prayers to the saint on the inside of their armour. It is often joked (though out of earshot of any Inquisitors) that Vidicus would have made a good Acolyte.
Rybel Gorth the Watcher in the Dark
Rybel Gorth is unusual among saints because in life he was a psyker. Shunned by the Ecclesiarchy at the time and held in deep suspicion by much of Imperial society, Gorth was seen as a “necessary” second-class citizen. It is written that in his early life he worked aboard a warp-faring vessel, aiding the Navigator and helping to protect its passengers and crew. His story begins, however, during the evacuation of Canopus during the Heresy of Numbers. At this time, the world was being turned to ashes by bitter civil war and a great army of heretics had turned upon the Ecclesiarchy. Formerly a haven for religious learning and scholarly study, Sylor was filled with thousands of prominent and learned members of the Ecclesiarchy. Rybel Gorth’s ship was the only one to reach the world before the end and took aboard hundreds of Ministorum officials and scholars before making a hasty retreat into the warp. Tragically, however, the ship became lost in the warp and years dragged by as it searched for escape. During this time, the crew and passengers began to die. Fearing the loss of the wealth of knowledge he had been part of rescuing, Gorth used his powers to draw out and store the minds of those who died, keeping them safe within his own. When the ship finally broke free and found its way to safe harbour, Gorth was half mad with a brain brimming with a hundred minds.
Before he died, he transcribed the gathered knowledge of the scholars of Canopus, ensuring its survival. For his sacrifice, the Ecclesiarchy at the time blessed his memory and raised him to sainthood.
Rybel Gorth has few shrines and statues erected in his honour. Even now, centuries after his death, a certain distaste of him exists within the Ministorum. Even the majority of citizens who know of him, see him more as a malevolent presence rather than a source of comfort and guidance. They associate their fears about psykers and the warp with the saint, seeing him as the embodiment of this evil.
There are those, however, that do not have their vision clouded by such fears. These are mostly scholars, adepts and, of course, psykers. These people see Gorth for what he was—a powerful psyker who was able to use his gift to hold the warp at bay and keep safe those around him. He has become a protector of those who would deal with the forbidden and the unknown, especially psykers who try and divine secrets from the warp or use it to send messages across the stars. Psykers often say prayers to Rybel Gorth when they use their powers, hoping that he will protect them from the perils of the warp. Scholars who seek ancient secrets also pray to him lest they unearth or awaken the unnatural. The tale of Rybel Gorth is also often taught to Imperial psykers during their training, impressing upon them the importance of their devotion to the Emperor and the Imperium.
Quivvarr Nog of Fedrid
Few primitives have ever achieved sainthood, though Quivvar Nog is one of the rare exceptions. Hailing from the feral world of Fedrid, he was a warrior of one of the great plains tribes who told stories of long ago, when men were star-walkers. It is said he was present to witness the first failed attempt by the Imperium to recover his world. A group of missionaries came to Fedrid to spread the Emperor’s word and bring it back to the fold. No sooner had they made planetfall than they were set upon by the locals and almost wiped out. It was Nog’s tribe that gave the survivors shelter and listened to their tales of the Imperium. So inspired was the young warrior, he knelt beneath the stars and swore an oath to the Emperor that he would bring Fedrid back to him. For sixty long years, Nog made war on the tribes of Fedrid in the name of the Emperor, finally as an ancient and scarred old man unifying his people. It was not until two hundred years later that the Imperium returned, prepared to once again turn the wayward tribes of the world to the light of the Emperor. What they found was a world more devout than most, which honoured both the Emperor and his saint—Quivvar Nog. When tales of the primitive that had brought faith to the world reached the ears of the Ecclesiarchy, a delegation was sent to investigate. The results were that Nog was recorded as a hero of the Imperium and made a saint.
Shrines to Quivvar can be found dotted throughout the sector, especially on primitive or feral worlds where the inhabitants identify with him. There has been some dispute over the best way to revere Nog. On civilized worlds, marble or granite statues are built to him depicting the saint as a cleanshaven giant dressed in primitive but well-made armour with strong and handsome features. On primitive worlds, clay or wooden idols made in his likeness show him as a squat ugly man with dirty hide armour and a ragged cloak. It is argued that the former is a fantasy concocted by the Ministorum to make him more palatable to more civilized citizens, but one that ultimately betrays the saint’s memory. This has lead to the unpleasant practice of befouling statues and shrines that promote this “false” image by those who claim to honour the “true” Nog. In either case, Nog enjoys a broad following as the saint of perseverance and final victory through faith. He is often revered by those with long, thankless tasks ahead of them. Nog is also associated with those too stubborn or too stupid to give up, an aspect many Acolytes can readily relate to.
Elana the Unshaken
A missionary, Elana made it her lifelong goal to bring the word of the Emperor to the dark places of the Imperium. In her time, she travelled far and wide across the sector, often choosing planets noted for their unruly populations or deadly indigenous life. It is written that she bore a scar for each world she visited. From the swamps of Ichovor, where she suffered a disfiguring filth-fly bite, to the wilderness of Dusk, where she was savaged by predators, she stoically accepted these “scars” as part of her service the Emperor. More than once, Elana was captured by natives to be maimed or tortured in the name of heathen gods. In all such stories, however, despite the horrors inflicted upon her, she never faltered in her faith. In the end, after travelling to scores of worlds, Elana was captured by a foul Daemon-worshipping cult on a remote, unnamed feral world. The natives tied her up and threw her into their master’s cave as an offering. Over the next month the Daemon tired to break her faith. Each day it would come and devour some of her flesh and offer her release. Each day she would refuse. Eventually the Daemon consumed her completely because she would not turn from the light of the Emperor. Elana had a final vengeance, however, as, in eating her flesh and spirit, the Daemon ingested that part of the Emperor that resided within her. The Daemon died screaming as the holy light burned its essence away and freed Elana to her final reward. Clerics like telling this story to prove that faith in the Emperor can overcome anything.
Elana is a much loved and widely accepted saint within the Calixis Sector, and shrines to her can be found on many worlds. This is no doubt because she embodies many of the most desirable qualities in revering the Emperor, namely duty and devotion above personal safety. It might also be because hearing even a little of the saint’s suffering can make someone feel infinitely better about their own woes. Those that care for the sick commonly invoke the name of the saint in their work. They preach that Elana watches over all those who suffer in the Emperor’s name but who do not lose faith. In some places this line of reason has led to self-flagellation to honour the saint, though the more mainstream elements of the Ecclesiarchy agree that this is probably misguided. Acolytes may find solace in the worship of Elana when they suffer grievous wounds, praying to her to remind them that all that they do, they do for the glory of the Emperor

2023.06.10 00:00 Independent_Cattle10 Turkey's so-called anti-Erdogan opposition is the most ridiculously incompetent and arrogant collection of politicians I have ever seen - some thoughts I have shared with some political science friends regarding the recent election results in Turkey
As a Mongolian born in China, the pattern of the Turkish opposition reminds me of the so-called Tiananmen Square leaders. After the massacre in Tiananmen Square in 1989, these people were seen by the Western world as the most hopeful opposition in China. Over the past thirty years, these people have received substantial funding from the West, but they have used this funding to satisfy their own luxurious lifestyles. They hold annual candlelight memorial events, attend inaugurations of various monuments and memorial halls to gain attention, sympathy, and more funding, and then that's it. They have not taken any substantial actions against the rule of the Chinese Communist Party; they simply repeat their own tragic experiences to gain attention and more support. They would rather spend money on continuing to build meaningless monuments than use it to lobby American politicians and economists.
Why do I think the Turkish opposition is similar to these wastes? In fact, if you just observe the various leaders of the Turkish opposition, you will see how small the world is, with one group of wastes resembling another in astonishing ways.
First, the leader of the Turkish opposition, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, is a terrible leader. What's even worse is that he is considered the most suitable candidate the opposition can come up with. He is a fascist politician in any country's political spectrum, yet he appears very moderate within the entire opposition group. Moreover, he exercises various forms of centralization within the party. In fact, he is a poor replica of Erdoğan within the CHP. Despite leading his team to lose almost all significant elections for twelve consecutive years, he has not been dismissed or assassinated, which makes one wonder if the entire CHP is composed of social scum with less ability than Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, to the extent that no one wants to hire an unemployed dockworker from Istanbul with lira that is practically indistinguishable from waste paper to replace him.
Fortunately, the average intelligence of the Turkish people is not so bad, but unfortunately, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu's support rate among intellectually normal voters in Turkey is pitiful, and he has no chance of winning against Erdoğan in a one-on-one election. So, he formed an opposition alliance that includes well-known fascist figure Meral Akşener, a Gray Wolf who massacred thousands of Kurds and suffers from severe hyperthyroidism, Ekrem İmamoğlu, an overeducated intellectual, and Mansur Yavaş, a former member of the terrorist organization MHP who constantly aims to take over Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu himself. He may need to appoint 6 to 8 vice presidents after winning the election.
The opposition alliance was formed, although almost everyone in it has a record of killing and abusing civilians, and they are basically racists and fascists. Yet, they are praised by the Western media as the embodiment of freedom and democracy. By the way, most of the student leaders in the Tiananmen Square in China, who were hailed by the West as democratic fighters, have a father who is a general in the People's Liberation Army or a high-ranking official in the Chinese Communist Party.
However, even so, their approval ratings were still insufficient to secure an electoral victory. As a result, they reached out to the main Kurdish party, the CHP. But as mentioned earlier, almost everyone in this so-called opposition alliance is a racist and fascist. You can guess what happened. Without the Kurdish votes, they were bound to lose. However, from the first day of the elections, this group of misfits began mentally abusing Kurdish voters, commanding them to vote for them or else Kurdish rights would be further restricted under Erdogan's re-election. They refused to adopt any policies that would benefit the Kurdish people after the elections, refused to release Kurdish politicians imprisoned, refused to stop oppressing the Kurds, and even forced Kurdish politicians to admit that the Kurdish people in prison were all deservedly labeled as terrorists.
The political agenda of the opposition alliance has nothing to do with freedom, democracy, or human rights. Anyone with a shred of common sense can see that their ultimate goal is to replace Erdogan's extreme nationalist and racist government with another extreme nationalist and racist government that is pro-Western. The only difference between them and Erdogan is that one is pro-West and the other is anti-West.
Similarly, China's so-called opposition leaders also harbor hostility towards ethnic minorities in East Turkestan and Tibet. They have long refused to engage with Tibetan and Uighur organizations, and some even call for the violent occupation of Taiwan and deny the existence of concentration camps in East Turkestan, labeling the Dalai Lama as a terrorist.
Naturally, Western countries activated their propaganda machinery. Even Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu's Twitter videos, which are as boring as my grandmother's bedtime stories, managed to garner millions of views. Keep in mind that Turkey has a population of only 85 million. Pre-election polls funded by the West consistently showed that the opposition would win by a significant margin. But these opposition leaders, after seeing such obvious false propaganda, managed to deceive themselves. It is truly shocking that these carefully planned intentions to undermine Erdogan and his supporters had no effect on their target audience. Erdogan's supporters continued to rally enthusiastically, while the opposition fell for the deception themselves.
Since March, there has been an abnormal optimism within the opposition. All my Turkish friends believed that the opposition would surely win, and as a result, the opposition alliance fell into severe internal strife. Meral Akşener, along with Mansur Yavaş, attempted to overthrow Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, and other candidates resorted to violence to secure positions in the new government. Kurdish leaders were told that they would have no place in the new government while being labeled as terrorists, yet they were still asked to vote for the opposition.
This reminds me of the period before the 1964 massacre, when those heroes in the squares believed they could seize power and started appointing provincial governors and ministers. By the way, during this time, these people remained highly vigilant against the demands of Tibetan and Uighur people, who were informed that they would have no place in the new government but were still asked to support the opposition's cause.
This dark humor frenzy continued until May 14, and we all know the result—the opposition lost in the first round of elections. The opposition was shocked by the outcome and spent a whole week without taking any substantive action. Then, these useless individuals decided to abandon the Kurds and embarked on a campaign of extreme nationalism and racism to appease nationalist voters. The result? They suffered an even more disastrous defeat in the second round of elections.
Then what happened was that the opposition accused election fraud, but eventually accepted the results without any demonstrations or street movements. The opposition alliance, which had been aggressive before the elections, disappeared like a deflated balloon. After losing the support of the Western media machinery, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu's video views returned to normal.
So, what are these opposition parties doing now? They are busy blaming each other, seeing it as the fault of the West, the Kurds, the Azerbaijani dictator Aliyev, the Kurds again, and the Armenians. Basically, it's anyone's fault except their own.
By the way, the opposition in China has been doing the same thing for decades, portraying themselves as perfect victims and blaming the whole world.
I understand that the political ecosystems in China, Turkey, Armenia, and Mongolia have many differences, but there are also commonalities in political logic.
China's opposition has been fragmented for over thirty years, while Tibetan and Uighur people have established their own unified authoritative institutions and held several democratic elections. Yet, the Chinese opposition still attacks each other like a group of mafia gangs.
The situation of the Turkish opposition today is similar. Each opposition leader within their own parties acts like a mini-Erdoğan, while the PKK-YPG organization, which has always been seen by the mainstream Turkish public as terrorists, becomes increasingly disciplined and organized.
It seems to me that both the Turkish and Chinese opposition, just like the ruling class in their respective countries, are actually part of the imperial ambitions. They don't oppose Erdoğan and Xi Jinping's imperial ambitions; they only believe that they can achieve those ambitions better if the state machinery is in their hands. Therefore, their opposition to Erdoğan and Xi Jinping is not against these toxic ambitions but rather a desire to replace them.
Thus, they participate in politics with a ruler's mindset, believing themselves to be the chosen ones. They are more inclined towards winner-takes-all, while Tibetan, Kurdish, and Uighur people, who are relatively disadvantaged ethnic groups, tend to cooperate and compromise, which makes them perform better in political operations.
What's even worse is that, like the Chinese opposition, most supporters of the Turkish opposition are urban students and middle-class individuals from coastal areas. Moreover, these regions historically lack a culture of martial arts, have alarmingly low military enrollment rates, and lack any armed forces, either foreign or domestic, similar to India's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), to protect themselves. This leads to the situation where this group can only attack Erdoğan in the realm of public opinion.
I know that public opinion can play a significant role in many cases, but to be honest, throughout history, public opinion has been like pepper on a steak, adding flavor but having no practical effect. Hitler was defeated by the Allied forces, not by newspaper articles exposing the atrocities in concentration camps. Saddam was captured by the US military, not by online criticism.
If the opposition considers the elections unfair, they should find ways to use force or initiate street uprisings to overthrow the unjust results, just like the Ukrainians did in 2014. Instead, they engage in ineffective and superficial actions through public opinion.
Unfortunately, this is the current behavior of the Turkish opposition. They simultaneously shout that the PKK is a terrorist organization, that the Republic of Turkey doesn't need a second official language, that Greece oppresses the Muslim minority in Western Thrace, that the Greek president is weak in the face of Erdoğan, that they support Azerbaijan's invasion of Armenia, that the Armenian president attended Erdoğan's inauguration ceremony, that they cheer for the ethnic cleansing of Kurds in Afrin, and that they blame Syrian Kurds for not liking them. These people want others to fight and sacrifice for them against Erdoğan so that they can enjoy privileges on the land stolen from the great massacre in the Republic of Turkey, while they hide behind and reap the benefits.
Now, I actually wish that Erdoğan would drive tanks into Istanbul and give these opposition parties a heroic death so that everyone would forget these pathetic clowns. At least, many years later, their children would shed tears in front of their tombstones instead of laughing at the ridiculous words and actions of their parents before their death.
I can already foresee the ultimate outcome of these so-called opposition groups. The West has wasted thirty years of time and money on the Chinese opposition, and now they have wasted five precious years on the Turkish opposition. I hope that those who harbor illusions about the Turkish opposition, especially the Armenians, understand that these people are nothing but a laughable bunch of waste. It would be better to channel their energy and resources into engaging with Greece, Cyprus, France, and the United States. Even negotiating with Erdoğan in exchange for time and money to rearm would be more productive than hoping for any internal change within Turkey through the so-called opposition.
I apologize for my limited English proficiency. These are some thoughts I have shared with some political science friends regarding the recent election results in Turkey. If there are any inaccuracies, I welcome corrections.
