2023.03.29 15:06 TURTLES_INC Does anyone know of an example of WT using scholars to reaaon the bible says one thing, when it literally says another?
For example: the days of creation. They say that Genesis 1 is from the view of someone on earth and the sun and moon were "made to appear" rather than were created after light. Or literally, the DAYS are not 24-hour days.
Why I bring this up is that WT applies the 70 years of desolation as a literal 70 years from destruction to return, rather than to rebuilding of the temple. Or since the Bible is using 70 years, it could be a number that means a completeness as the bible uses quite often. It obviously is in WT best interest to not change 607, but I'd like to know what you guys have to think on this subject and any examples of non-literal bible examples WT uses that agree with secular scholars.

Marc Chaikin explained why you have a new bull market in front of you... a volatile one, but a bull market none the less.
And he's put together
his all-time best offer for the perfect strategy to take advantage of it. It's all thanks to the reappearance of the Breakaway Momentum Indicator – one of the rarest of the signals Marc relies on for timing the markets.

Marc's now looking ahead to a very bullish 12-month period that could see the S&P rise 20% or more.
BUT there's a feature of this bull market that makes it unique:
The 3%-8% pullbacks history tells us to expect along the way – like the one we're experiencing today.

2023.03.29 15:04 Random_Happenstance Preparing to Homeschool-ideas from a teacher
There has been an understandable uptick in homeschooling posts after the recent school shooting in Nashville. I am a public Elementary School teacher for the past 11 years. I now work in a hybrid school that uses an online curriculum. I’d like to share some insight and what I feel parents need to consider in order to be successful at homeschooling.
I really like the K-12 (now called Stride) online curriculum. It comes with a box filled with real workbooks, chapter books, picture books, and parent guides. You can get materials for science and social studies too (but my school decided against the extra cost). We teach the kids science and social studies. I had the 5th grade parents buy the social studies textbook online for cheap.
Pros- -rigorous ELA and math -Easy online platform -Online lessons have text to speech if needed -online lessons are pretty sufficient for 3rd-12th -parent can delete and move lessons around to fit with experiential field trips and learning -good assessments that can be retaken -lots of writing in ELA -takes about 4-5 hours to complete a days worth of lessons.
Cons- -lack of science hands-on and needs to be supplemented. -social studies can be boring -lack of online work for sci/ss and so students need to be working on paper notebooks and checked regularly -unmotivated students can click through the lessons without doing much work by letting the computer answer for them and filling it in. -spelling on ELA sucks. It’s 25 words 3rd-5th each week that aren’t aligned to anything else.
With whatever online curriculum you are looking at, consider the parent role. It is VERY important to be checking in daily if not throughout each lesson. The workbooks are super important to practice the skills. They need to be done daily. Don’t skip any. Students who don’t have a parent at home who is AVAILABLE and can speak English are not successful and get very little education. K-2, the lessons are actually TAUGHT by the parent. The parent needs to be sitting there the whole time until maybe the end of 2nd.
Many of the families have extra curricular activities like music, dance, gymnastics, or sports. These students need that to learn social skills and not go insane at their house. I feel like this is common sense, but think about cost. It adds up.
Perhaps use the summer to look over options and decide for the Fall. Don’t take this decision lightly and be prepared for the change. The smoother the transition, the easier it will be for everyone.
I am open for questions but know this is only one program and what I see as a teacher who is helping these kids and parents. I felt the need to share my experience. If not received well, I’ll just delete this post. Education is changing and the more alternative schools like mine are successful. I love my job but this learning only works for some families. It will be quite a change.

2023.03.29 15:02 fuzzypipe39 Useful tips in working with kids with autism?
Obligatory I'm in phone, English isn't my native language, this is in Europe and I'm in a need of advice.
23F here. Finished my ba in ECE and started work. My current group is all neurotypical (if this is the correct term). In the group we identified a couple of kids who are more advanced for their age, however we don't have anyone who'd fully fit the inclusivity. That's something my country recently started pushing for (rightfully so!), along with opening more kindergarten institutions and making childcare more available. (Another note, nursery is 6m-3y, kindergarten is 3-6y and there's 6 months of preschool between ages 5 & 6 before enrolling in elementary school).
Long story short, my study program is in a process of renewal and with the old law still current, we didn't get to work much with inclusitivity. It was an "you'll learn if you encounter it in the wild" situation. That's also gonna be a subject in Master studies (which are optional),I'm not gonna enroll in just yet until next year, but I obviously will probably come in contact with more kids on the spectrum. So far I've had two in my practice during uni and the teachers there & I butted heads over it. I don't have any experience or ways & tricks except the usual gentle teacher stuff.
Basically, I am not entirely sure what to do and how to approach a child who's in the middle of a meltdown (again, sorry if this isn't the proper term). My teaching work is a gentle approach just like I'd approach my hypothetical children. Talking it through, working through feelings, age appropriate explanations, trying to avoid punishments for the most part that I can, no raising voice (let alone screaming/yelling) except for when it's ruckus and they can't hear me. When it's a tantrum or a meltdown, my approach is to kneel in front of the kiddo, leveled eye contact, hold their hand if they allow, gently talk to them and attempt to calm them down by physical contact (rubbing their arm, hair or back if they allow). Offer safe space, some time out if they wish in a quiet corner so they can pull themselves together eventually, an explanation if they wanna go home or when parents are coming to get them.
When a little girl (who was strongly suspected to have autism) had an intense meltdown last year, those previous teachers yelled at her she isn't allowed to do (activity other kids were doing). They left her to scream and cry on the floor and took all the other kids out. This baby was crying on a dirty floor and was then so dissociated and spaced out. It took her approx 1.5 hrs to stop crying and come to the space where other kids were. I went in a few times to check on her, but each time the teacher pulled me out. They claimed I'm gonna "spoil her", "this is what she needs to do by herself", "she'll stop being hysterical eventually".
Now I understand some kids need safe, quiet space, but leaving her alone really rubbed me the wrong way. Along with yelling at her and basically belittling her she's "misbehaving so she won't get to do (activity)". I'm just not sure what to do when it comes to such situations. Is offering a quiet space good? Do I, or do I not try to be with the child and offer gentle physical or verbal calming like I do with usual tantrums? What could I possibly say to help ease the kiddo's struggle? Another friend is always offering physical contact to a non-verbal boy who is also rarely physically moving. He's okay with hand holding and of course I'd also see if that'd be helpful, but sometimes these things overwhelm me in thinking and I feel they're not enough.
I am well aware autism is an entire spectrum and each child is super sensitive to a different thing, some to too much noise, some to touch, etc. I will always try to adjust as much as I can to every child in my care, I just feel so bad I don't have enough training & education in inclusitivity and basically "special needs".

2023.03.29 15:01 keshke 31 [F4M] WI/Midwest - looking for my emergency contact
Well, here we go again. Trying this for the 300001st time again because tinder and bumble are still a bust, so why not? I’m 31 and currently live in central/northern-ish WI. I have a full time job and am a genuinely good human being (at least my mom thinks so?). I work in healthcare full time in a female dominated environment which makes finding a partner extremely difficult. Really I’m looking for someone to touch my butt on a regular basis, you wouldn’t think that would be so hard to find?
I love a lot of things…road trips, house plants, espresso, true crime, crocheting, sunflower seeds, sphynx cats, Halloween, naps etc etc.
Looking for a male, preferably in the Midwest who is willing to send a photo to verify your actual existence and that you are not a Nigerian prince because, internet. Must like 6’ tall thick women!

2023.03.29 15:01 Conscious_Security96 I'm not getting a lunch on rainy days...
Like the title says, I'm not getting lunch on rainy days. I teach a special education preschool class and there is another preschool class at my elementary school.
On normal days, both classes go outside at the same time, so myself and the other teacher take turns supervising recess while the other takes a lunch.
It's been pouring rain non-stop in California so we haven't been able to go outside, which means I don't get a lunch break. I've brought this to my principal a month ago. At first she was confused... Then agreed to help. She came once to cover my lunch in the classroom, then I never heard from her again.
Yesterday, it started raining halfway through the day. The school announced it's raining. I emailed my principal for lunch and called the secretary. No one came.
I'm so fed up. This is getting ridiculous. I don't know what to do. I'm fed up. I just want a break!!!!

2023.03.29 15:00 RGRahulTheGreat Two parents’ illnesses ruined the last 2 years of my life.
I’ve never vented online b4 but my life has never been worse so I thought maybe this would help a little.
Quick intro about myself. I turned 20 two weeks ago. I’m a Nepalese guy living in Hong Kong as a second-year University of London student studying in an HK university building. I‘ve never really been great at studies, just average at best most of the time.
Since I‘m living in HK, the most expensive place to live in the world, I decided not to move out after getting into uni. My father welcomed me to stay. I was pretty excited and nervous about the new school year as I knew it would not be a piece of cake. Unfortunately for me, the first school year would be a lot harder than I thought, and for the wrong reason.
The first week actually went okay. I had already learnt some of the things I learnt in the first lesson years before though the same couldn’t be said for some of my classmates.
Then the second week was when trouble started. I live in a two-bedroom apartment. I lived with my father, mother and a domestic helper. I used to sleep in one of the bedrooms and share it with our helper while my parents took the other room. That all changed after my father was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a rare type of bone cancer, back in 2017. This made his already weak immune system(as he often got sick for some reason, usually with the flu every year even after taking a flu jab) even weaker. Like most cancers, there was no logical explanation for the cause of this unlike some such as lung cancer which can be caused by excessive smoking and drinking. Therefore, he told my mom she could no longer sleep together with him as she rarely took showers(I’ll explain the reason for this later) and he would be more likely to get sick if he had to sleep with someone as dirty as her. She then demanded she take one of the beds of the bunk bed in my room. Being the good son that I am, I offered to sleep in the living room on a mattress so she could sleep in my room and the helper wouldn’t have to sleep elsewhere. I was fine with it at first until the second week of school.
In the first week of school, I had no trouble sleeping. That changed in the second week though. In the second week, on some of the days, she would watch TV until 2, 3 or even 4 am. I couldn’t sleep with all the noise. Then on the days when I didn’t have school in the morning, I would wake up at 11am. So basically I would waste nearly half the day doing nothing at all. I told my mom she was disturbing but she wouldn’t listen. I said before she rarely took any showers. The reason for all of her unreasonable actions is because she’s schizophrenic. Yes, another parent with a rare illness.
If I try to reason with her, she won’t listen. If I rebel a bit, she becomes violent. Apparently, the chances of coming across a schizophrenic being violent is very rare.
Risk of getting multiple myeloma in US: 0.76%
Schizophrenia in the world: 0.7%
Chances of meeting violent schizophrenics in the world: 0.7%x23%
Chances of knowing at least one with multiple Myloma and one with schizophrenia: 0.76%x0.7%
Chances of knowing at least one with multiple Myloma and one violent schizophrenic: 0.76%x0.7%x23%
One of the many violent incidents happened long before I was born. My parents got into an argument which led to my mom throwing glass at my dad which hit right above the eyes. He could have been blinded for life.
Anyway, the whole sleeping issue ended after I bought some earplugs with money I got from the government as voucher to boost spending for the economy. I even bought a Logitech Crayon for studies as the school had gone back to online class due to the Covid situation in HK. I struggled a lot without the crayon. My dad again wouldn’t buy one for me so I had to do it myself later on. I didn’t get any pocket money so I had to wait for the voucher. My studies improved a lot but it wasn’t enough.
Unfortunately, by the time I got the crayon and the earplugs, it was still way too late for me to catch up in all of the school subjects. A school year normally lasts 9 months. I basically did nothing for at least 5 months. In the final exam, I failed 2 half-courses and 1 full-course. Though I did just enough to be able to start my second year without having to repeat my first one. I could have chosen to repeat or even stretch out my learning to a total of 4 years instead of 3 but I didn’t as I wanted to finish ASAP. I didn’t want to stay with my mom for long.
After my exams, I tried to study for the retake. My dad’s situation got so bad that he could no longer work, move by himself or even use the toilet without my help. I spent a lot of time taking care of him until he passed away on 31st August 2022, a few days before my second year of school started. Then for the whole of September, I had to spend a lot of time preparing for and attending my dad’s funeral, numerous prayers, the cremation and a bunch of other work. Then, starting in October, I had 1 month left to study for retake so I barely studied for anything new I had learnt in September and October for the second year. The same could be said for September. I had to do the retake online on an exam portal which wasn’t working a few days before and on the days of the exam. I wasted my last few study days on trying to fix it, calling the school in HK, London. I eventually fixed it 1 hour after one of the exams had already started. By then I was fed up with everything that had happened: my mom disturbing me at night, my dad refusing to help me and fixing the exam portal so I cheated for one of the exams. I got caught of course. I failed the other one again. I only started seriously studying the new things in November. I still haven’t caught up yet. There’s another retake in addition to the one I had failed which I will do in the same month as the second year exams. I will do the retake I failed one more time.
In late December, my domestic helper became sick as she had stomach ulcer. She needed to do surgery. She said she wanted to have it in Nepal as she wanted to be close to her family so me and mom let her. It’s been two months and she hasn’t come back. The recovery time is normally 4-6 weeks. The last time she contacted me or my mom was on 7 Jan. I don’t know why she hasn‘t been replying to any of my message. I saw her being online a few times on fb messenger which I used to contact her. The last time being 12 Feb this year. Since she left, me and mom have been eating out almost every single day. And by eating out, I mean that I go out to buy takeout and bring them back home so she doesn’t have to leave the apartment, wasting more of my precious time.. One of my mom’s sisters does most of the shopping for us now that our helper is gone. Though most of the time, she isn’t very nice, to us at least, just like most of the people on my mother’s side of the family. She lies, gets jealous of us easily and can be stingy at times. She lied about my mom lending money to my dad a few weeks after he had passed away. She used to be jealous of my mom because of the wonderful husband she had. But then again, I‘m sure anyone would envy someone who doesn’t do anything but has a wonderful spouse who does everything. Meanwhile, her sister has a husband who doesn’t work or do much around in the apartment while she is the sole earner and she does all of the housework. The only upsides her husband has is that he’s a nice guy and he has a lot of friends who could be useful. Lawyers, politicians etc.
Lastly, since my dad didn’t have enough time to write a will, so nearly everything that he owned automatically went or will go to my mom, being the “loving” wife. She doesn’t deserve a single cent. For one, he paid off many of her debts when they met. He also paid for land in Nepal which she kept in only her name instead of their names together and her education. Three Master’s degrees worth of money. She studied English, English Literature and Political Science. What a waste of money! For one, she doesn’t even work so what’s the point of having them. She can’t communicate in English properly as she’s always making grammatical mistakes. Her English is worse than that of a primary school student. Third, I don’t even know how she even got a degree, let alone 3! She used to plagiarize a lot, copying and pasting things she finds on the Internet and using the information and citing it as her own. To make things worse, she couldn’t even do it herself! She couldn‘t bother to learn how to do copy and paste commands on the computer so my dad had to do it for her. In addition, she never did anything nice for him such as defending him from her horrible family members. As a normal person and an accounting an finance student, I find trusting an adult who doesn’t even know how to do simple 1st grade mathematics with a lot of money very baffling and insulting.
I’m hoping that I’ll easily finish my education, get a good job, leave my mom for good and never see her again, find a nice girl(not like my mom), settle down, have kids and avoid awkward questions from them like “Hey dad, mom has parents which we often see. Why haven’t we seen yours yet?”
I still have yet to catch up on what I’ve learnt in the second year and the first.

2023.03.29 15:00 eneug Do you like Lichess Thematic (From Position) Tournaments?
| Just wondering what others think about Lichess's "Thematic" tournaments. These are ones that start from a specific position. (Screenshot below.) Sometimes the positions are 1 move into the opening, and sometimes they're a few moves in. Personally, I love playing in these tournaments simply because I get to learn a new opening that I otherwise wouldn't encounter. It's like trying a sampling plate at a restaurant or sampling at a winery/brewery. I just get a taste, and if I like it then I can try it again sometime in the future. Even if I don't play it again, I get familiar with a new pawn structure, new ideas, and sometimes (unfortunately) new opening tricks that I can use or avoid. Sometimes, for aggressive openings or gambits, they also lead to crazy tactical positions that I otherwise would rarely encounter. Plus, most of the people in these tournaments are also just learning the opening, so you are at the same disadvantage and figuring out the same things as everyone else. (This isn't the case with every opponent, of course, but it's more often the case then not imho.) Last point: I also like that on Halloween, they do the Frankenstein-Dracula Variation. Hehe. That said, if you care a lot about optimizing your rating (I don't), then these tournaments are for certain best to avoid. What do you think? Pro or con and why? https://preview.redd.it/p3crjm9rdoqa1.png?width=3840&format=png&auto=webp&s=43c25cb77cb09b181b8877701d34f22a92aef361 submitted by eneug to chess [link] [comments] |
2023.03.29 14:59 notoliberals How do American high schools work?
How do American high schools actually work? Does anyone who finishes middle school get accepted? Highschool is 4 years, right?
Here in Russia, every student is part of a "class" - a group of people whom attend most lessons together. Is there a similar structure in American high schools?
From what I read and watched I got the impression that every class you attend would have different people from possibly different years/grades, and that instead of being transferred from one year to the next you are transferred to the more advanced class once you complete the prerequisite class; like a skill tree. Is that correct?
Are "freshman", "sophomore" etc. colloquial concepts or do they have legal meaning? Do you get officially transfered from "freshman" to "sophomore" or are these just ways to colloquially refer to how many years you spent in school? Here in Russia you either get transferred to the next grade or you fail the year, in which case you have to repeat the whole year - not just the class you failed. This isn't the case in the US, right?
Can you fail highschool? Can you get kicked out of high school? Do you need to study for the whole 12 years even if you don't plan to go to university? To what extent can you choose which classes you attend? Is there a minimum level of knowledge you need to have in order to graduate? Is there an exam at the end, comparable to British A-levels or Gaokao?
In movies you see a lot of people spending their time in school doing what I would consider non academic stuff - clubs, team sports, cheerleading. Is this required? Are you expected to spend your time doing all that stuff?

2023.03.29 14:57 MusPhyMath_quietkid Racist Classmate
I go to an online school and so we have classmates from around the world... I tend to do well in Geography lesson and known for being effient and fast in the rate I do class work I suppose? My teacher was telling people to speed up when we are doing a class work (that I finished like 20 minutes before this happened) and my Russian classmate said like "No offensive to him but he is Asian" or something like that... implying me being Asian is the reason for my ability. I don't know how to react :3 Someone replied like... you (my classmate) are Asian too (because majority of Russia is also in Asia?) This is probably my first ever encounter of racism? I was called a racial slur in this sub once before though

2023.03.29 14:55 Enough_Client_5779 I'm really confused
I don't know. Am I a good person? I was friends with an online friend for about six months. I don’t even remember why, I just took it and cut off all ties. I cleared the chat and stopped talking to her. Before this situation, it began to seem to me that she began to move away from me. The situation in brackets was the last straw for me. (I think I was offended by the fact that she said that I was a bad mathematician. p.s I'm really a bad mathematician) I acted terribly stupid. We are told that the main thing is to learn the lessons of the past and live on. But sometimes the past pops up in memories and makes you feel guilty

2023.03.29 14:51 Kitchen-Tomatillo-61 So nice that this is over and done with
It's quite peaceful now, for now, seems to be done. Finally, hopefully. If God is real then I'll pray....well I shouldn't have to pray to God to help keep me where I'm at for a while. But it is reason to celebrate. Two years of trying to figure out what's true, constantly thinking about it. Find something else to fill my mind and certainly not scriptures.
Not so sure I'll ever read scriptures again. Which apparently is not even a big deal because many many Christians do not read thier Bibles either. I'm not sure what those individuals outlook upon God would be if they studied certain parts, over and over, where God was not so...just the parts that nonbelievers point to, the wrath and destruction parts. Why they do not see God as love.
I'm not mad at God anymore. Certainly not sitting here believing that he'll do me some soilds and give me good gifts, instead of stones and snakes. The idea that if I sit down and make a list and head into a new direction then God will pop in here and there to help my list along, well I dunno about all that. Maybe he does that for some people, others are left to wonder where God is.
But it's really nice. To not be obsessing over God anymore. And everything included within belief as well. Just not a path I'll ever go down again, hopefully, probably never going to shake my fist at God again nor plea for his help at any point in life. Spend four decades not believing in any of this so it makes it easy to not get worked up when God doesn't show up.
It's very freeing and a giant sigh of relief. It's over. The battle with the invisible God and trying to figure out what to believe within belief. There's so many things to choose from so with that knowledge, choosing close to nothing doesn't seem wrong. Maybe God is just there and confused as well, as to how so many beliefs about himself came to be. Maybe not confused more like rolling his eyes.

2023.03.29 14:51 falexanderw Ideas for piano pieces for intermediate pianists
I’m looking for classical pieces that aren’t ridiculously complicated for someone who only has 4 years of classical training in primary school. I recently went back to lessons for half a year as an adult to brush up on my theory and have mastered Moonlight Sonata and Bach’s Prelude in C Major BWV 846. I’m wrangling with some of Chopin’s easier nocturnes and am looking for something to learn next! Any suggestions are welcomed! If this is not the right sub let me know.

2023.03.29 14:46 ChiliConKarnage99 Took my Daughters to Bowling Lessons for the first time
You might get a kick out of this.
Took them to lessons and it was their first time really bowling with out the ramp or any help from me. They struggled of course and they felt a little bad because some of the kids in their lessons have obviously been bowling longer and did better.
They were feeling a little dejected and I told them not to worry because they’re just starting out. Also, the bowling alley they take lessons at rotates their shot every month or so, so they were actually learning on a challenge shot and not a normal house shot. I pointed this out and explained they actually bowled on a pattern harder than normal.
My daughter turned to me and said, “Did I do bad because of the oil?”
